Well, obviously I am not in need of this information for myself just yet. I am hoping to get some information for my aunt, who is hoping to begin homeschooling my cousin this year. They just moved here over the summer. My cousin is 16 and was recently hospitalized in the ICU and underwent surgery. This all happening just before the start of the school year for a new school, my aunt has decided to do the homeschool thing. Since I have jumped in this year after researching just about everything I can, my dad has referred my aunt to me. I guess he thinks I am a pro now....but I know I am far from it.
Anyway, I have scanned so many books, I can recall somethings, but no real specifics. I know that homeschoolers typically take the GED here, unless they go through an accredited program, (like BJP or Abeka). So, really there is not much difference overall. However, I recall reading somewhere in a book that you could track your hours and make your own transcripts for "graduation" to meet college entrance requirements. Is anyone out there doing this? Or have information on how this works?
Also, does anyone have information on any homeschool groups in this area that focus on Homeschooling through High School. It would be awsome if I could get my aunt in touch with a group that could be of more assistance. I feel this group has been a wonderful resource in starting homeschooling and am so glad to have it. I do not know that I would have felt as comfortable jumping right in without it.

I know a lady from Rio Rancho who has highschoolers (homeschooled) and also knows others who do. I don't know too much about them doing things on their own as far as transcripts but she might be of help.

I know Lisa has some older kids, and will likely post a reply. My sister-in-law is sending her first homeschooled child off to college this month. My sister is starting the high school years with her oldest this year. She's homeschooled her kids from first grade on. If you would like me to send your post to them with your email address so they can offer advice, I will.

Hi Jess~
I have a 14.5 yr old son. So I'm beginning to address (face) all of this more seriously with our upcoming school year. In the past, I haven't worried with record keeping. However, this year, we'll be keeping simple transcripts. To do this, I purchased two colored composition notebooks. We'll separate it, as needed, into quarterly sections for the year. (I'm thinking one book for each semester.) In the notebooks, my son will record subjects covered, and time spent for each, as well as any volunteering, sports, club meetings, etc. I'll routinely look over to be sure everything is being tracked. Although my daughter is only 11, I'll do the same with her, also.
One book I've found tremendously helpful is: "Homeschooling Through The Teen Years - Your Complete Guide to Successfully Homeschooling the 13- to 18-Year-Old" - by Cafi Cohen
I know our local Community College, here in SF, offers GED Prep Classes, and then the test. In addition, they offer basic classes that older teens can take such as English, Math, and maybe some Science(?).
As kids approach their highschool years there are a lot of learning outlets, if parents don't feel they can cover everything. Colleges, Distance Learning/Satellite courses, tutors, video lessons, study groups, and Co-ops are some of the helpful alternatives to attempting to do it all on your own.

I'm not sure if anyone is interested, but Santa Fe Homeschool Association is having a weekly (Wednesday afternoon) Park Day & *Teen Gathering*, beginning this week. I know it's a drive, but might be nice to do occasionally, so that more homeschooled teens (preteens are welcome also) can connect. I have a 14.5 yr old son & 11 yr old daughter. Also, once a month, I'm coordinating the Bard Society {Poetry & Lit Club for homeschooled preteens & teens}, and beginning in October - Art Smarts!{Art History Club for homeschooled preteens & teens}.
