See http://www.abqhomeschool.com/nmlaws.html for up-to-date information on the New Mexico homeschooling laws, and links to the notification form and (if desired) immunization waiver form.

Just a quick question on this topic... If we move in May and my kids are currently registered here in VA, when do I have to register in NM? Can I wait until before the next school year begins in August or so, or should I do it when I arrive? Basically VA requires testing, and while it isnt a problem to do it, I would love to not have too as it costs money to do. So Im hoping to be able to skip it. Any thoughts or info on moving "mid year"??
THANKS guys
Kari
I guess I could have looked this up on my own, I just wondered if anyone else has done this and had advise. |

I'm SO glad that this was posted. I had totally forgotten that I needed to send in my notification. I did it online and didn't have any problems.

If my daughter is going to be 5 in July, do I have to notify the public school system?
Thanks

Margo, there was some discussion of this a while back. It seems that kindergartners are ort of a special case. You don't actually begin homeschooling them until the start of the school year (in August? September?). So I don't think you need to notify until within 30 days after that. But thereafter, you need to file in April for her if she's going to continue to be homeschooled. I'm not an expert, so don't rely on me, this is just what I think is true. Maybe someone else who knows more can tell you for sure.

Thank you so much for the reminder! I had just done this back in January, due to a move here, but I had truly forgotten about the April 1st deadline for the 2005-2006 school year. By the way, if you hear about any other single parent homeschoolers in Albuquerque, I'd sure appreciate hearing from them. Thanks again.

Hi Jane, you might want to post the inquiry about single parents as a new thread, more people would see it. Seems like I've heard mention of at least a couple of other single moms posting in past months. Good luck!

What does that mean, to "establish a homeschool"? Does it just mean I'll be homeschooling my son? And if I won't start 'teaching' him until the fall (after we move to NM in May) I just register then?

Hi Margo and Jennifer, It is my understanding that if you aren't currently homeschooling in NM than the April 1st deadline does not apply. For instance, if you move here in May, or your child turns 5 in the summer, you have 30 days to notify the state once you start homeschooling in NM. (your homeschool start should be at least by the start of public school in your district though so that you're not viewed as not having your child enrolled in school at all) Does that make sense? This is only my understanding though so it's best that you actually contact the state via the below link (they also have a number if you have any questions). And yes, establishing a homeschool in NM simply means that you are homeschooling your child - not an actual school with other children attending. Hope this helps!
