Hello everyone. My name is Dawn and my husband Sam and our three boys are moving to Albuquerque next month. My husband is in the Air Force. I have three boys, ages 8, 7 and 14 months. I just started homeschooling in December. I am overwhelmed with a move to NM. I know nothing about the area and being new to homeschooling in general it is just a lot to handle. I am hoping to meet some people online prior to my move so I can find out about the coop and its activities and how to get involved.
Are there activities over the summer? Playgroups anyway for my children to meet others?
Reading other posts I realized we have to register our children to homeschool, is there anything else I should do prior to or right after arriving to NM.
We are moving to Bernalillo County. Anyone else in that area?
Looking forward to getting to know everyone and finally getting to NM!!

Hi Dawn.. We're an Air Force family too.. We moved here May 27th of last year.... We moved from Charleston, SC. It's a different feel with the desert but I just LOVE ABQ! I've really enjoyed all the new and exciting things to see and do. My son is 6 (so far he's an only child) and this is my first official year homeschooling since he's in Kindergarten. New Mexcio Homeschooling laws are easy and simple.. You will need to notify the state that you are homeschooling but not until the fall.. It's 30 days from the time you start homeschooling here in the state.. I'm assuming you'll take the summer off for the move and getting settled and then officially begin in the fall. It's a simple online application... Once you get settled here, we can get you that link...
I live on the Westside of ABQ and it's kind of sorta near Bernalillo-- maybe 20 mins driving time. I'm not sure where you are moving from, but to me the Westside of ABQ and Bernalillio and Rio Rancho all just seemed like suburbs of ABQ... Residents here think we live waaaaay out in the boonies but everywhere I've lived, it takes 30-45 mins to drive to the city.... However, there is so much here on the Westside and in Rio Rancho that I'm getting like the locals and thinking yeah, it's too far to drive to the Northeast! (Not to mention the rocketing gas prices!) I really am having trouble driving the 45 mins to base for the commissary and doctors appts etc... I actually just submitted paperwork to change our PCM... There is a GREAT homeschooling group on the base-- Kirtland Homeschoolers... I am currently a member of that but not sure if I will continue next year due to the drive... If you want, you can email me at vandyvic@yahoo.com and I can send you that information.... I also know of several homeschooling groups in Rio Rancho-- much closer... I'm looking into some of them for our family next year... I'll be happy to share what info I have with you...
I know several homeschooling families with boys 8-6 yrs old and although we are all in different homeschooling groups and activities, we try to get together for the park or skating, etc. We also participate in a Sports and Rec class that has gone very well this spring...
Anyway-- if you'd like, email me and we can start talking and I can give you all my homeschooling info and tell you all about ABQ from my perspective...
Take care! Good luck with the move! Vicki vandyvic@yahoo.com |

Thank you so much for your quick reply. And your email was filled with a wealth of information even if you didn't realize it. We currently live in Florida and everyone here is the same way about traveling. I travel well over an hour for some doctors appointments which is fine with me. But locals are like "you go ALL that way” It really does not bother me to drive. I was under the impression that where we were going to be about 20 minutes or so to the base.
I am planning on starting the boys with their work in August or so. That is when the schools start here and figured I would keep them on the same schedule. My husband and I are still looking into curriculum and that is also very overwhelming. . .
Anybody know anything about K12? Or Calvert?
I look forward to meeting everyone and I am very excited to see children, especially boys, that are around my children's ages!!
Thanks again Dawn

Welcome Dawn! Like Vicki said, there is alot to do here in Albuquerque and the homeschooling support network it great. I just wanted to clarify really quick that Bernaillio county is different from the city of Bernalillo - which is on the west side near Rio Rancho where Vicki lives. The city of Albuquerque is in the county of Bernalillo so you probably are pretty close to the base if you're going to live in Albuquerque. Hope that makes sense. Looking foward to meeting you! Thanks Sharon! Sorry, I read that too fast and totally missed the county part!
But that brings about a question for me... Isn't the entire ABQ city limits in Bernallilo county? Being part of the city limits, I've always thought I was in Bernalillo county? I'm asking cause the only time I had to find out what county I lived in was when I registered our homeschool... Now I'm hoping I didn't do that wrong! |

Like I said I am sooooooo unfamiliar with the area that all I know is when they gave us our address we were in that county. I know we are on the southwestern side of town by the Rio Grande, evidently in a new housing area called Anderson Hills. I have no idea to be honest, we have directions to the management company, then to the house other than that I have no idea where anything is LOL!! I am really glad to see that everyone has been very nice so far and I am starting to feel less stressed about finding friends and playmates for my children. Dawn |

Hi Vicki, Don't hold me too this but I'm pretty sure that Rio Rancho is in Sandoval County. I'm not exactly sure where you live so you'll have to check as there are parts of the west side that are not actually Rio Rancho and I'm not sure where the county line is drawn. But yes, as far as I know, Albuquerque City limits are all in the county of Bernallilo. Hope that makes sense.
I think that you'll find lots of networking here Dawn so don't worry! People in NM are very laid back, friendly and easy going. Take care and good luck with the move! Sharon |

Andersen Hills is a new development in southwestern albq. close to the base (10-15 min southwest) We just move here and we were looking to buy a house there since my husband also works at the base. So you'll be pretty close. Hope that helps!

Sorry Dawn, didn't mean to confuse your post with my own question! Thanks Sharon.. I called my neighbor just to make sure I was indeed in Bernallilo county. When you said that you if you were in Bernallilo it would be close to base, it just made me wonder if I was in different county?!?!? But I've got it all straight now.. I'm in Bernalillo about 3 miles from the county line...
Dawn I'm sure you're gonna love your new home and location! The opportunities for homeschoolers are just great and you're gonna love that too!!! Have a safe move and we'll see you when you get here! |

Hi Dawn!!
Welcome to the southwest area of ALb. We live in the southwest section north of the Isleta Reservation. I'm not familiar with your housing development, but it must be close. If you're near the Rio Grande then there must be old trees, lots of green. I sure hope you enjoy the area. I like living in the river valley. Also, the hidden benefit to being in the South Valley - less traffic to contend with. But, we have to drive to the northeast often.
We arrived here a few months ago and are working on building a new network of friends/playmates. I have one son, Luke, who is 10 months old. We plan on homeschooling Luke. I am excited about it! Currently I am trying to educate myself about curricula, but most importantly trying to learn about how to entertain a young toddler!!
I hope your move goes smoothly!
Tammy
