Ok I have been reading the boards for a few months and everyone here is so helpful! I am new to homeschooling, and have been kind of going it on my own with some help from out of town friends. I have 3 boys, my oldest has been doing Kindergarten this year, my middle is 3 and does some preschool, and then my baby will be 1 on the 30th of March. We have had so much fun this year, but SURPISE I am pregnant again, with twins! That has really thrown a loop into my planning. Ha. I am due in October. We should be starting 1st grade, but I might start earlier in the summer and take a month or so off in the middle. Has anyone else had this sort of situation? Any other twin moms out there with older kids to teach? I have no idea what it will really be like. So far I have written my own curriculum, and done all my own projects etc. I am thinking I might need to suppliment next year with a set curriculum so I don't get behind. I don't know that I will have the time to set it all up myself next year! Crazy! So any advise, help, encouragement would be great. I haven't called to meet anyone yet, still not sure how much I can be involved, but I will see.
WOW! How exciting. We decided to school year round after our twins were born. Then we take time off when needed, for illness, appointments, vacations etc. It seems to work well for us.
I have lots of little twin tricks I learned, a twin nursing pillow is very helpful even in the hospital and even if you don't nurse. The hardest thing for me, and something I never thought of is how you pick up and hold two babies that do not have head control yet. The pillow helped sooooo much. morethan1.com has some great gadgets. Also my favortie baby carrier, easiest to get them in and out and fits in your purse, and can be used for two when they are tiny , you can wear two when they are toddlers is newnativebaby.com.
I am so excited for you! ENJOY them because it goes by so fast.... I successfully nursed mine if you are interested in learning more, or just are looking for some support I am happy to help in any way. I used to bathe with mine when they were little. It was the only time I got one on one time with them, because I felt so busy with my other. We have two older daughters.
There are lots of ideas for Homeschooling and my oldest did some computer work when my twins were tiny, also the Need to know books are a great base if you write your own curriculum. Bookcloseouts.com has some great prices on Comprehensive curriuclum of basic skills, and learn at home.
Melissa, CONGRATS!! I have a 4 1/2 year old and my twins, (my babies!!) turned two today! Yes, there were some tears shed! I was not homeschooling Harrison yet when I had the twins so I don't have too much advice in that regard, but, if you need any twin advice, I am here! There is also the Albuquerque Mothers of Twins Club which is a great resource! You can join before you have the twins and I would recommend it! They have a new moms meeting 1/2 hour before the regular meeting and then also the semi annual garage sales where you can buy everything you need from clothes to strollers to highchairs, cribs etc. There is actually a meeting tomorrow if you are interested in checking it out, the topic is 'how to talk to your kids about sex' which I am not really interested in so some of us with younger twins will be meeting at Scarpa's at 6:45 if you want to join us for our own informal boycott night Either way, I know when I found out I was having twins, it was a great relief to meet and talk to other twin mom's, so you don't feel so overwhelmed and can be around people who can assure you that you will survive, instead of many of the people who don't have twins and have a tendancy to do the whole "oh my gosh, TWINS?" reaction
I know there is one family in the twins club who could probably answer many of your questions about the homeschooling situation. She has three or four older kids and just a year ago had twin girls, and homeschools. If you are interested in talking to her, email me privately and I can connect you with her. I don't believe she is a member of the homeschool co-op.
Let me know if you want to attend either and I can get you details. My direct email is itsmego@aol.com, I might not check the board again before the meeting but I would get my email.
And congrats on the news, as well as your upcoming and recent children's birthdays. You must have a very busy and fun household!
My twins were born first, and then came my daughter 6 years later, so I'm sorry I'm not much help in the first question you asked. But I do know some awesome twin timesavers and ideas, and am always willing to help and answer any questions about raising twins, if you are ever wanting some help or need to chat.
My identical twin sons just turned 9 years old last month. Hard to believe I have 9 year olds! My daughter just turned 3 on March 5. I've been homeschooling my children for 2 years and have enjoyed seeing what a growing period it's been. The biggest lifestyle change we've had in regards to our homeschooling lifestyle is flexibility. With your newborn twins: 5 children all under the age of 5, you are going to want to employ the same tactic in your own household, too. Sounds like you have your children's best interests in mind, though. And you will do just fine as long as you somehow find some time for you, too.
If you ever just want to chat or ahve any questions, please contact me at Twinville2@ yahoo.com (without the space)
Don't forget: Drink plenty of water! Get lots of rest!
Thank you all for your kind replies! I am sorry it took me so long to respond. This whole pregnancy has thrown me for a loop (very sick!) ugh, but I have your e-mails, and do have some questions so you will probably be hearing from me.
Melissa, it was great to meet you at the park today! I'm new to this group and I am also so impressed by the wonderful, helpful people I'm meeting. I think that the co-op will offer your family many opportunities to bond with similar families . . .
Oh my goodness, Melissa! I didn't remember when I met you today that you were the one expecting twins. It was wonderful to meet you today. I was a little flurried with all my marigold stuff, so I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to talk to you more.
