We are looking for a community where walking/ biking are the major mode of transportation......( within wlaking distance of libraries, doctors, etc)Moving from out of state, would like some suggestions. Thanks
I think most would agree that Albuquerque is not really a 'walking' town being that it is so spread out. Although, you can find some neighborhoods where quite a few amenities are within a mile of your house. A real estate agent might know many of these neighborhoods. I live in the NE heights close to the intersection of Academy/Wyoming. We can walk or ride bikes to the grocery, natural grocery (Whole Foods), library, gym, bookstore (Borders), some restaurants, and even Wal-Mart. 2 parks are also within a mile of here. Hi there! I totally sympathize with your wanting walking & biking to continue to be part of your life after you move! Until we moved here, we did almost all our traveling by walking or public transportation (but Boston and Portland OR are a different kettle of fish from here).
I would guess that around UNM might be the only part of town where walking/biking are MAJOR mode of transportation. However, there may be many more suburban areas where it's possible.
For example, I live in avery suburban part of NE Heights near Eubank/Paseo del Norte. From my house, I have 2 grocery stores under 1 mile away, 1 about 2 miles away, another about 3 miles. The library is roughly 3 miles away, and we have several nice parks in walking or biking distance.
I live in the Parkland Hills area (near Ridgecrest and UNM) and am within walking distance to almost everything I need--the city swimming pool, tennis courts, playground, bank, post office, doctor, dentist, restaurants, grocery store, video store, and Wal-Mart.
Two libraries are within biking distance. Many people drive to our neighborhood to walk or ride bikes (they park in front of my house, that is how I know). Many of my neighbors walk on their errands. We're also on a major busline, although the Albuquerque bus system here isn't that great.
Parts of the Ridgecrest neighborhood are also near the shops.
Some of the downtown neighborhoods are also very convenient. I was just on New York Avenue by the aquarium last weekend, and those homes are in walking distance of museums, stores, etc (not sure if there is a library nearby).
Be forewarned, though, all of these places I've mentioned (including the UNM area that Elizabeth mentioned) are urban, and you can expect 1) a higher rate of crime than in the suburbs, 2) the occasional transient (mostly peaceful), and 3) panhandlers in the grocery store parking lots.
Welcome to Albuquerque! Yes, I would agree with what has already been stated. I've lived here my whole life (yikes!) and the first neighborhoods that came to mind when I read your post was the Nobhill, Ridgecrest or Parkland Hills areas (all near UNM - the university). North campus area (Altura area) is also nice although I can't think of a library near there off hand. A good realtor (especially one who specializes in that area would be very beneficial). There are also neighborhood pockets in the North Valley that would also offer these qualities. Corrales (local village near north valley) would be another good option. Good Luck! Sharon
I think you asked about Albuquerque, but up here in Rio Rancho, there are several neighborhoods that offer these benefits.
We live in Enchanted Hills neighborhood, and we can use our bikes/scooters or stroll the walk/bike trails to get to the grocery store, Walgreens, several neighborhood parks, bank, daycare, Blockbuster, Dominoe' Pizza, credit union, physicians, ice cream shop, veterinarian, Wendy's, and an elementary and middle school, and even the Santa Ana Star casino (which also has horseback riding, a day spa, and bowling alley)
Some of our retired neighbors don't even use their cars...and a couple of them don't even own a car anymore.
Also, we are only 10 minutes from I-25, and about 20 minutes from Albuquerque's Paseo Del Norte. We are only 1 minute away from NM-44 which is the road that goes up to NW New Mexico (Farmington) and into Colorado. Which is great if you like to hike and camp and explore the landscapes and cultures of New Mexico.
