[face=Arial]Hi, I'm new to this group. I have a 7 yr. old, 5 yr. old and a soon to be 3 yr. old...all girls. I would love you meet other parents with children of similar ages. I have been having the worst time trying to motivate my 7 yr. old to actually complete her assignments. The minute my back is turned she's trying to sneak off and turn on the TV.
On one hand I've been trying to let her self-direct her studies, where she picks a topic and I cull every possible resource to create and relate it to a variety of things....like during Charlotte's Web we've used it to study pigs and farm animals and did piggy math worksheets, diorama's, applied the "piggy" concept to learning about money principles, humane treatment of animals, historical and regional setting, etc. She grasps everything and asks a million leading questions. Yet, the moment I leave her to complete assignments she is well versed in and has the tools to locate the answers or simply has to apply herself.....she will not do most of them on her own.
If I offer her a monetary reward for bonus math problems, those answers will be right regardless of how difficult they are. Yet, the easier ones she won't even do or will do so quickly and sloppy the answer is wrong. Now, I've only been officially homeschooling for the past 3 years, so maybe someone has some suggestions for me. [/face]

| Hi! Welcome to the group. I don't have any great insights into your problem. My sister homeschools 4 (soon to be 5) kids with the oldest 2 aged 8 and 6. Recently she was having similar problems and decided that TV/video was the problem, so she packed up the TV and put it in a closet somewhere. I haven't heard from her since then, so I don't know if that helped any. |

At seven years old, she should be old enough for an accountability system of some sort. And, based on what you say about her math performance, it sounds like she responds well to external motivation. You can create a chart with her responsibilites on it, including staying on task when your back is turned. For each day that she competes her responsibilities, you make a note of it on her chart, where she can see it. Designate one day of the week as "payday". It doesn't have to be a monetary pay; it could be just little hand made "tickets" that she is given for doing what she is expected to do. If she wants to be able to have a friend come over, watch television, play a game etc., she needs to have X number of tickets, which she surrenders to you in exchange for doing whatever she wants to do. If she doesn't have the tickets, she can't do the fun activity she wanted to do. She will soon learn that it is worth doing what she is expected to do. There may be a fair amount of weeping and wailing before she catches on, but if you are persistent, it wil pay off.

Hello, I have two girls, 5 and 6, and I am looking for some consistant companions for them. My 6 year old is extremely intellegent and well advanced in her math skills but we also have ours issues with the television. I truly believe that if Karl Max were alive today he would label the TV the opiate of the masses. Unfortunately, the afternoon time at the park does not work for our schedule. I was wondering if maybe we could arrange a time for the girls to get together at a park some time in the am or for a picnic lunch. We are available Tuesday through Friday and would be willing to search out any park in the city. We are always looking for a new play structure.
