 Books to charity/scholastic books (currently 856 views) |

I distribute Scholastic book catalogs through my MOMS Club. Scholastic sells discounted kids books through the schools. We don't earn any money from book orders, but we do earn bonus points that can be used to acquire free books, which we give to charity. So far, we've given 200 free books to Ronald McDonald House, a charity providing housing to out of town families with a child in the hospital.
We're looking for a new charity that could use children's books, because depending on the size of our Sept order, we think we'll have enough bonus points for 100 more books. Does anyone have a suggestion? This year we were thinking of providing giftwrapped books to the charity so that they could be used as Christmas/birthday type presents for the kids.
Also, if anyone wants a copy of the catalogs I have, just let me know and I'll try to get them to you. I have Firefly (pre-K), Seesaw (K-1), Lucky (gr. 2-3), Arrow (gr. 4,5,6), Tab (gr. 7+) and Club Leo (Spanish), as well as miscellaneous Trumpet and Troll/Carnival. |

You may want to look into are Joy Junction which is a Homeless shelter for families, women and children. They are located in the South Valley of Albuquerque and I think would be grateful for such a donation.
There is also Ciudad Los Ninos. They are located here in Albuquerque. They offer daycare services for homeless people while they look for and start new work. I know my old MOMs Club was donating their books to them so I am not sure if books is their greatest need.
Another one to consider would be The Albuquerque Christian Children's Home, which is located on the weside near Coors and Montano, (I think).
There is also CareNet, Pregnancy help center. They help the moms out during pregnancy and after the baby is born. They help out even into the toddler years. They could probably find use for children's books as gift to older siblings or even for the little ones to encourage mom to read to them.
Noonday is another wonderful organization here in Albuquerque for the Homeless population. I do not know that they have as many children come in as the others, but they could probably still use them.
These are all the local organizations I can think of at this time that may be able to use children's books. Let me know if you want more info about any of these and I would be glad to get it for you. If I do not already have it, I will find it.

You also might consider Richard Paul Evan's, The Christmas Box House Foundation. They provide homes for children who have been displaced due to trauma in their homes. It is one place where they can have all their needs met...a home, therapy, education, etc. They don't have to deal with the stress of going to new location after new location for their various needs. I just went to their website, http://www.thechristmasboxhouse.com/ , and they have a wish list there. At least one of the houses was wishing for children's chapter books.
I highly reccomend his books. They are great....all the way from The Christmas Box series to the books for children. He has a wonderful talent.
Also, Elizabeth, I would like the book orders (Firefly, Lucky and Arrow).

| Kari, thanks for the suggestion. I'll check out that web site. I generally carry a few catalogs with me, so if you're going to any co-op activities in the next week or two, remind me to give them to you when you see me. |
