I am so grateful that I, at least so far, do not have to deal with a school government like the one in Pittsburgh.  Schools are not allowed to teach religion to public school students, but they can tell homeschoolers what they can and can't teach about religion?  Amazing.  I found this article on FOX today.

Homeschoolers Fight Regulations
Friday, August 27, 2004

PITTSBURGH — While many parents are preparing their kids for school, the Newborns are taking their suburban Pittsburgh school district to court.

The Newborns homeschool their kids and object to the legal requirement that the local district superintendent must have final approval of their children's education, which includes religious studies.

"It's not the paperwork we are objecting to ... because there is no religious objection to paperwork. It is the final approval by the superintendent, a secular institution, over our children's religious education," said Maryalice Newborn.

The Newborns believe the education law treats homeschoolers unfairly because Christian or private institutions are exempt from such strict regulations. But Duquesne University (search) Law Professor Robert Barker believes the Newborns have a tough fight ahead.

"In order for a person to invoke that law successfully, that person has to prove the action of the government, in this case the school district, constitutes a substantial burden on those peoples' exercise of religion," Barker said.

With the backing of a national homeschool organization, the Newborns appear ready for a long court battle.

Can anyone say "HSLDA"?  I thank God for them and all the hard work they have done to fight for our freedoms in home schooling.  I wonder if HSLDA is the "national homeschool organization" the article mentioned.

I agree with you......I'm very, very grateful for our freedoms that we have here.  I'll be praying for that family to have victory in court, because a victory for them is a victory for us all, but a defeat for them would be a defeat for us all.

Just a thought... if you are getting your information on this solely from Fox News, you definitely need to get a second, unbiased, source. Recent polls have shown that people who rely on Fox for their news are wrong on the issues about 60% of the time due to the network's intentional slant. So I would always double-check somewhere else to get the full story!

Fox News may be slanted, but no more than other media outlets...just on the opposing side.  Just my $.02

That, in itself, was a very slanted statement.  (not you Jessica; you posted before I finished my reply.)

I posted a message, which pertained to homeschooling.  I was not attempting to praise Fox or condemn any other news source.  However, I have a hard time not standing up for the guy who is being unjustly attacked.

Who funded the polls?  Who conducted the polls?  How were the questions phrased?  Who determined whose opinion was right or wrong?  What were the issues being addressed by the polls?  Statistics can prove anything one wants them to prove, even two opposite sides of the same issue.  The same poll, with just minor changes in semantics and the ordering of questions, can bring opposite results.

I tend to be pretty good at sorting out fallacious statements.  I weed out the fillers, those items placed there to distract you from the real matter at hand.  In fact, statistics are, more often than not, just that...placed there to distract you from the facts.

For the record, I do not rely solely on Fox...I do not even rely solely on any news source in this nation for my information.  As I have taken the time to research issues from multiple angles, I have found Fox to be a fair reporter.  When it comes to issues that are matters of opinion, I have often disagreed with certain Fox reporters.  When it comes to facts, I have rarely found them off base.  Even my mother-in-law, a die hard defender of the left, agrees with this, and she spends all day, every day, watching every news source available to her.

Those who disagree with Fox are generally politically driven and closed minded.  Can anyone tell me which major network is more balanced that Fox?  They all have a slant, one way or the other.  The issue I commented on was not a political issue; it pertained to homeschooling, so I'm not sure why it is being challenged.

I do not vote a straight ticket.  I have campaigned for candidates in both major parties and in two of the minor parties.  I vote for the person, not the party.

For responding to this dig at Fox, I somewhat feel that I owe an apology to the members of this board.  In settings such as this, I tend to stay away from politics and religion.  That is not what this forum is for.  In fact, I'd venture to say that, despite the time spent with me, most members of the co-op have had no clue what my religious or political convictions are.  I will share if asked and I will defend myself if challenged, but I will not take it upon myself to force my views on others.

To freedom of the press-

Regardless of what the media paints the picture to be if this is in anyway a true story it is very sickening that a single school district has that much CONTROL over any homeschooling family. I'd be furious and fighting with everything in me to defend my rights to teach my children what I think they should know. There is just no way I would accept 'permission' to teach my children as I see fit. The government wanting to know that homeschool children are being educated is one thing, but for a school district to be allowed to approve or disapprove what religious aspects you want to teach your children in your home is way past crossing the line.

And to freedom of speech!
