Student Ecology Research Program Working with Homeschool families At the NM Museum of Natural History and Science
Below is a list of the course offerings I had previously asked for your input in creating. Registration information is included at the end. Thanks for your help - i hope you like what i've come up with!
Biomes and Habitats of NM, 6th - 8th grade Thursdays, October 21st - November 18th
Classroom Days 9 am - 12 pm Field Trip Days 9 am - 3 pm
Cost: $55 Minimum and Maximum Class Sizes: 8 - 13
New Mexico is a state that is home to five of the six major global biomes. In this class we will define what these are and explore how and why they are different. What is a biome and how is it different from a habitat? What are the biomes of New Mexico and what lives there? Why is one soil type different from another? Field trips will be taken to explore these biomes on November 4th and November 18th. The trip on November 18th is a FAMILY DAY.
Icky, Indispensable Insects, 5th - 6th grade Tuesdays, February 15th - March 22nd
Classroom Days 9 am - 12 pm Field Trip Days 9 am - 3 pm
Cost: $ 70
BUGS! This class is scheduled to take advantage of this great large format film in the Museum?s Dyna Theater and to catch spring?s first hatch of arthropods. We will learn about insect taxonomy, anatomy, and identification through hands-on activities in the classroom and in the field. As students learn these ?bug basics?, we will use field trips and speakers to understand the role these creatures play in ecosystems. Field trips will be taken on March 1st and March 15th. March 1st is a FAMILY DAY.
Spring Courses
Wildlife of NM, 3rd - 4th grades Fridays, April 15th - May 20th
Classroom Days 9 am - 11 am Field Trip Days 9 am - 2 pm
Cost: $60
This class is an introduction to the kinds of animals that live in New Mexico. We will identify the most common animals in each of New Mexico?s different habitats. Students will learn what these animals need to survive, which ones are threatened or endangered and the difference between a native and exotic species. Field trips will give students the chance to have fun outdoors while looking for animal evidence and estimating species abundance.
Aquatic Ecology, 6th - 8th Thursdays, April 14th - May 20th
Classroom Days 9 am - 12 pm Field Trip Days 9 am - 3 pm
Cost: $80
Water is the element that ties all of the cycles together and creates a link between the mountains and deserts of New Mexico and the Pacific Ocean. In this class, we will introduce students to New Mexico?s five major drainage basins and use this foundation as a basis for learning more about our own state?s hydrological cycle. How much water is there? How can we tell the difference between a healthy stream and a polluted one? This fun class teaches students many of the basic concepts of ecology. Field trip days are April 21st, May 5th and May 19th. May 5th is a FAMILY DAY.
Geology of New Mexico, 6th - 8th grade Wednesdays, April 13th - May 18th Classroom Days 9 am - 12 pm Field Trip Days 9 am - 3 pm
Cost: $ 70
New Mexico is at the intersection of 6 major geologic provinces. Every type of geologic process you can imagine has created our landscape; including volcanoes, mountain building faults and earthquakes, ancient seas, glaciers, river deltas, and vast wind-blown deserts. This class will take us on a journey through time as we learn how to "read the rocks" in order to look at how New Mexico has changed over the past 300 million years and how today's landscape has been formed. Fieldtrip days are April 27th and May 11th. May 11th is a FAMILY DAY!
You Need to Know
FAMILY DAYS are when parents and siblings are invited to join their SERP student on one of their field trips. Because, the Museum has limited space for transportation, we may need a few parent volunteers to drive with their families.
SCHEDULE CONFLICTS are a challenge when trying to design courses like these. If you cannot find a class that matches your needs and you are part of an active group of families who you think may be interested in one of these classes, please contact Rebecca Salem. We can arrange a special class in some cases; this may incur some additional cost.
PAYMENT is due the first day of class. A two-payment option is available; half of the total cost is due on the first day and the second half is due 30 days later.
CLASS SIZE is limited to 8 ? 13 students. It is the policy of the Student Ecology Research Program to keep a 1:7 teacher to student ratio when on field trips. Many of these classes will maintain that same ratio in the classroom.
DISCOUNTS are available at a rate of $5 for Museum members.
