Hello Everyone, I thought I'd re-post the notice about the PE class again in case there are some new people to the board. If you're interested in joining the class, please contact me - class starts this Thursday! UNM is located midtown and parking is right next to the gym -$1/hr. Our first class is focused on space awareness. Thanks! Sharon
I've organized a PE class for homeschoolers in conjunction with the PE department at the University of New Mexico. In essence, we would be helping out the students who are majoring in PE by providing a group of children for them to work with in return for receiving a great, free PE class. The student teachers break the children up into groups and do some cool movement activities, etc., with them. The benefits include a good student teacher ratio, the use of a wide range of equipment, and of course, it's free.
The class time is Thursdays, 8:45 - 9:15 am on campus at Johnson Center (across from Popejoy Hall off Central). The dates are October 7th through December 9th, not including Thanksgiving and fall break (Oct.14th), for a total of 8 classes. The professor would need the kids there and ready to go at 8:45, which means that you'd probably need to be on campus no later than 8:30 by the time you park, walk in, etc.
Although there is no charge for the program, there is a charge for parking. Parking costs $1 for up to one hour and $2 for up to two hours. So depending on how fast you are getting to the class and back again you may be able to do it all in one hour. The parking structure is right next to Johnson center so at least it's very convenient. I tried to get us parking passes, but to no avail. Parking services are pretty strict.
They are asking for a class size of 20 to 30 children, ages 5-11. However, for siblings under the age of 5, they are going to provide a parent-tot group in which a student will oversee participation by the parents and children together in an activity. We need a firm commitment from those interested as they will be scheduling UNM class time to run the program, so we would need to be pretty reliable.
If you are interested in participating, please email me (exerscience@earthlink.net) with the number of children and their ages. For those of you who have already contacted me, I have you down on the list so no need to contact me again unless you are no longer interested.
I believe that there is an ongoing PE class offered to homeschoolers for a fee. I don't want to infringe upon that as I think that it's great; I just wanted to offer a free alternative to those that may be interested.

I sent this UNM P.E. notice to a friend of mine who is also teaching PE to homeschoolers. This was HER reply:
Quoted Text "Thanks for emailing this to me. The professor teaching this class is Awesome!! She is my prof. for the online class I'm taking and I know her personally. I would highly recommend this." |
I just thought I'd pass on the recommendation, since it was so good!

Hi AlbuqMom, Thanks for forwarding this - I appreciate it! There is still room for anyone who is interested so please contact me if so. We realize that the class is early in the morning, but it only meets 8 times and it should be well worth the experience - I believe Thanks Again! Sharon |

The PE class today was better than I could have ever imagined! There were about 25 UNM student-teachers who had the large gymnasium set up with loads of fun equipment! The kids were broken into age appropriate groups and the student teachers who worked with them were very enthusiatic and engaging. For instance, the parent-tot section took up about 1/3 of the gym and it was a maze with different sections (hoops and tunnels to crawl through, duck walks, frog leaps, a river with lily pads to walk on, tumbling mats, log rolls, cones, scooters, and more!) I highly encourage you all to join us for the next class as they are really going all out to make this a great experience for our children. There is NO CLASS next week due to UNM fall break. Class will resume the following week on Oct. 21st. There are still 7 classes left.
WE NEED MORE CHILDREN TO ATTEND! To make the experience worth the time of the instructor and the UNM students donating their class time, we need to provide them with enough children to work with. Only 4 of the 11 families showed up today. The teacher child ratio was about 3 teachers to each child! Despite this, the instructor and the students were very pleased to have us there and worked wonderfully with the children.
We are once again in full recruitment mode due to our poor attendance numbers today. Please spread the word to other homeschool families about this wonderful opportunity. We are very lucky to have such a wonderful resource at our disposal! Thank you, Sharon
P.S. - Parking was VERY convenient and easy!

| I was at the class today, and I wanted to second Sharon's report of how wonderful it was. Words just can't describe how great the experience was for the kids having so much wonderful equipment and the hands on help of the student teachers. Imagine having a gym class that's free, has a very high student-teacher ratio, and great activities. We ended up paying 75-cents for parking right next to the gym. This was a great, great class. If anyone is at all interested, I urge you to contact Sharon. |
