I was wondering if anyone could recommend a really good poster that displays a historical timeline? We are currently looking to purchase one as a visual reference over the coming years. As they tend to be big - we only have room for one! So far I've found a couple at cricketmag.com and one at learningthroughhistory.com, but I was wondering if anyone else had one that they really liked, etc. Kari, you mentioned before that you were as history major I believe - any recommendations on one that is accurate?
Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Hi Sharon, I've been looking for the same thing. The trouble seems to be that if they're trying to be all-encompassing they tend to be huge and wordy. I'd love to have something like it someday, and the one that looks most tempting to me isn't yet available in English (http://athe.eta.zettai.net/timeline/en). But I've been thinking I'm going to have to go with multiple timelines looking at smaller slices of world knowledge instead. Some I've looked at include the biology timeline (allposters.com search for "biology timeline") and several at http://elementary-educators.teacherspecialty.com/home.php (search for "time line"). The site you mentioned (learningthroughhistory.com) looks interesting. I'm going to have to spend some time there...
Oh, and did you know there's a NM History timeline poster at http://shopmuseum.com/shop/product155.html ?

Thanks so much for the leads Elizabeth. I'll go check 'em all out. Yes, I agree - they can be very large and wordy! One of the ones at learning thru history looks kind of neat. You can keep it in a 3-ring binder OR you can display it on the wall but again - it covers 25 feet!! I was thinking it may be cool to have in a binder b/c it has room for the kids to write things that they've learned - always a good reinforcer. Besides, Dane is really into making his own little books now with pictures and a few words, stapled together. He may think the binder timeline is cool.

One more thing Elizabeth - Have you ordered the Story of the World books yet? I think you mentioned that you were thinking of it. I was just curious if you ordered the "workbook" that goes with it, and if so, what you thought of it? |

That first link you gave Elizabeth is awesome! That would be beautiful displayed in our family room. Can't wait till it's released! For others who may be searching, the cobblestonepub timelines are the same ones available through cricketmag - they also look very good and are more suitable to kids. We may start with these.

| Sharon, I haven't ordered the Story of the World yet, but my sister sent me an extra activity book she had that went with one of the books. I'll see if I can find it and bring it to the science class tomorrow. Funny you should mention Dane is making books; Eric has been on that kick for a while now, too. |

This is kind of an old thread, but I found another couple of links to add.
There's a company called Knowledge Quest that sells blackline maps, historical timelines, and stuff like that. They have blank timelines with stickers you can add (or of course annotate by hand). They come as hardbound books or as 10x1ft posters (4 different posters to cover all of world history. They sell a number of different kinds of stickers you can use to fill in your timelines. Looks pretty nifty. Here's a link to the timeline stuff: http://www.knowledgequestmaps.com/timelines.htm. One thing, they say in an article on the site (http://www.knowledgequestmaps.com/article2.htm) that kids under about 4th grade don't really "get" timelines, that they're better for older kids.
Also, Sonlight sells a timeline book and stickers to go with it. I don't have it, but someone (Julie?) mentioned that it's pretty nice.

This is an old thread, but I thought I might offer up something that we do that my daughter loves.
In our old house, (obviously just moving here, we're in the works on it here), we painted one wall in the garage and then used white ribbon with dates on it. As we learned about something, even small things in the paper, etc. we would laminate a picture Sorscha drew or copy a page out of a book, etc. and then just thumbtack it on the wall.
The wall was huge, probably 20 feet by 10 feet high. My daughter is begging me to keep this up. She loves the Story of the World and now wants to go back and add all the timeline cards (laminated of course) onto the new timeline (yet started). Seems like we both have a lot of work to do.
I recommend this method for several reasons,
1. The child can see the whole view of history on one large area
2. They are the sole participator (it is amazing how much science ends up also)
and other kids birthdays, etc.
3. It's not all over the house. (We got the idea from friends who used their ceiling with a ribbon and the pictures were all over).
Not that I mind the mess....my whole house has turned into one big science and craft project!
Just thought I would share. I have pictures of it, if anyone wants to check it out. Eventually, ya'll can just come over and see.

| I'd be very interested in seeing your sonlight timeline. If there's any way I could just take a quick look. We're doing just a small study this years. Amereica-- from discovery, independence, to moving west. I'll also look into the other links, but it's much nicer to actually get a good look before you buy. Thanks, Carrie |
