Didn't someone (Elizabeth?) post about the availability of Rosetta Stone at the public library? Did anyone check into this and see what the details are? Is it truly free? Is it a full version?

If you go to the library's website, you can find it there. I believe it is the complete lessons and yes, it is free. You just need a library card. I didn't see it listed on the webpage now, but it was on there. I don't have time to look, but I would think it would still be there. Here is the addres for their website.

It appears to be the full version of all languages (not just Spanish), and we have not yet been asked to pay, so probably free. I believe the contract or whatever it is that the library signed with Rosetta Stone expires sometime in 2006. It'll probably depend on how many people are using it whether they renew after 2006.
We still love it! I am just so impressed with this program. If I had the time I'd be learning Mandarin and Turkish and lots of others!
To get to the program from the main library website at http://www.cabq.gov/library/ you click on the Digital Library link on the left. From there, scroll down about 2/3 of the way down the page and there's a link for Rosetta Stone on the right. (Choose use from home). You'll need your library card #. Also, a dialup connection is too slow to use from home, in my opinion.
Here's the link we use, not sure if it'll work for you:

Thanks for all this info! I want to start Dane (and myself!) on the Spanish using this program. We only have dial-up here in the Mountains though but maybe we can access it from the library every week. How often does Eric use it? Do they recommend a daily lesson for consistency and exposure? Hi Sharon, You might try it online to see about the wait. I think it took me about 20 minutes to download each lesson, but maybe if you planned it out well ahead of time it wouldn't be too bad.
After some trial and error, we've settled on doing it every other day (we do a science program on the computer on the other days). I don't bug him about how fast he progresses. I just ask him to use it until he gets tired of it. Sometimes it's in 15 minutes, sometimes in 45. It's pretty much self-directed, although sometimes he has trouble from looking at the picture trying to figure out what the person is trying to say. I can usually guess easily from looking at the pictures.
I tell him he can go on to the next lesson if he gets a 95 or better on the "test" part. Sometimes that takes him only one session, sometimes he goes several sessions before even trying the test. It varies depending on the lesson. Usually he's anxious to go on once he knows all the words in the current lesson, because then it isn't very interesting anymore.
I'm not sure what they recommend for frequency, probably more is better. But I don't think once a week would be a problem. The kids seem to retain the words much better than adults do. |
