Hi!  I am new to New Mexico and am just figuring out my school year for this year.  MY son will be 5 in December.  I know that if he went to public school he would not be required to attend until next year.  We are going to do kindergarten this year, but I am wondering if I need to register with my district this year or next year when he is 5?  Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Thank you

You should wait.  You actually don't have to prove you're homeschooling for TWO more years, BTW.  Being registered doesn't get you anything--it's just so that the state can track you, so there's really no point until it's actually required.

I have yet to look into registering since my son is only 4 but I think you can use the confirmation paper that you are sent to use at things like the Scholastic Warehouse Sale and for discounts at the bookstores in town.

I believe you are asked to register if your child is of school age (ie, 5) by the time the school year starts (or maybe it's by Sept 1st). Anyway, your son wouldn't be 5 by then. And you can actually defer his official start school age up to 7, but then you need to fill out another form to do that. As Shannon says, if you choose to register early, you might find that the confirmation paper is useful from time to time. I think there's a link somewhere to the state rules, but I don't have it at the moment. Good luck!

The age is 5 by Sept 1 to register them with the state as homeschoolers.  My twins' 5th birthday will be the 12th of Sept this year.  I do not think that I could register them even if I wanted to until next year.
