I hope this is the correct place to chat about this.  I have a daughter that will be starting second grade in the fall.  Up until now we have used Abeka for Language, phonics and writing, and have been very happy.  My concern is that she became REALLY board with the Abeka 1st Grade readers.  I found myself supplimenting with other books and she continued to read thoughout the year from the Amelia Bedelia series and has now found Junie B Jones.  My concern is that if I don't make a change in the English/Reading portion of our studies, she will become board.  Has anyone experienced this with Abeka and what suggestions do you have.  I'm not sure how I feel about the Sonlight curriculum since I see no writing?  Suggestions welcome!

WE used
Abeka until 2nd grade & THEN SWITched to Bob Jones Grammar and just read books on our own.  For 3rd grade we are doing sonlight & I have the Bob Jones as a backup in case I feel Sonlight isn't covering all I'd like to cover.  I really like how the BJ taught writing.  I am getting Writing Power this year too.

Amy, others may have better suggestions for you, but I thought I'd share what we're planning. Since my son is already reading, I just let him read what he wants (with plenty of suggestions of appropriate material from me, of course) and figure he'll learn how to read fine on his own without phonics instruction. For the other language arts stuff (grammar, punctuation, composition, handwriting, spelling), I'm planning to start Writing Strands (http://www.writingstrands.com) when he's in 2nd grade. They emphasize the child learning grammar & punctuation rules and spelling within the context of a daily writing/composition activity. I haven't started it yet, so it may not work, but the idea of learning while doing, instead of having separate drills in grammar and spelling, appeals to me.

Good luck, & please post again to share when you've found something that works for you.

Hi Amy!  I did Sonlight Core 1+2 last year with my 2nd grader and she really enjoyed it.  You are right that there isn't much writing, and I am going to do Writing Strands 3 to supplement this year (we are doing Core 3).  If you want to discuss Sonlight at all, feel free to email me at momtokatie@zianet.com.

I knew this would be the place to ask!  You guys are great!  So, no harm if maybe I continued the Abeka Lang and maybe used Sonlights reccomended readers?  I just don't want her to lose what she has already learned with Abeka.  Let me know what you think of that mix n' match!?

Sorry, I forgot to mention one of the resons I want to continue Abekas Lang program is the fact that she has the most beautiful handwriting I've ever seen in a 6yr old....not that I have much to compare to but even the teenager is amazed!and she enjoys the Letters and sounds and Language books!...Thanks again for everything

Only you know what best works for your child's needs.  If you feel you need to mix and match to get the best results from your child, go for it.  I doubt I could ever find one curriculum that alone could cover everything I would like to see my kids cover.  At the same time there are many things in curriculum packages that I feel would be a waste of time for my family.  Find what works best for you and run with it.
