I hope you guys are getting tired of my endless questions. =) However, I'm looking for a good language arts program for my 6 year old. She is almost done with her kindergarten work books and we have basically gone with what I've found in local stores. Now that she's starting to read I'd like to add in some basic vocabulary, spelling and grammar but unsure what might be a good program. I am not particularly drawn to any religious materials although we are Christian it doesn't really matter to me that the materials be Christian. I thought it might be best to maybe do some readers from the library and then find some good workbooks for her. Any suggestions or advice on what has worked for you would be very helpful. Thanks, Jo-Anne |

Hi Jo-Ann, I am new to home school as well, fortunately I had alot of help. One of the programs recommended to me for my 5th grader was the Easy Grammer, it is very complete when addressing grammer. I choose to supplement the spelling aspect with Scholastic's Spelling and it is woking wonderfully. I alternate the two and feel my daughter is exposed to a well rounded program. Saxon Math is another excellent program. Good luck and God Bless. Renea |

Don't worry about asking too many questions. This board is here to help with any questions you have about homeschooling and what is available to homeschoolers in the area.
We don't do any formal English curriculums at this time. We have found that doing a lot of reading and supplementing with the Dictionary, Thesaurus and other materials work for us for now. I also have a copy of the English Handbook for Christian Schools, put out by Bob Jones Press that we are going to start using in the New Year to really cover Grammar.
A couple sites I came across when looking for curriculum were http://www.TampaReads.com, which has vocabulary for elementary grades and http://www.Starfall.com, which has reading materials for early elementary. I am still considering using these with my boys at some point, but my daughter was beyond these already when we began homeschooling. My twins like the little video stories from Starfall, but, I don't have much else to add since we have used very little from either of these.
I think you also mentioned Writing Strands in a previous post. We bought Writing Strands, but have not used it any yet. You could say we are in a period of decompressing from public/family school. My daughter started homeschooling refusing to write and hating math. So, we are easing into everything. My ultimate goal is that she love learning and not feel that it is forced on her. Since starting homeschool, we have done a lot of reading and fun hands on learning type things. After awhile with no Math, she was begging to do some math. This is amazing, since last year I had to stand over her to get her to do her math work. She is still not wanting to write much, but we found her a penpal and they exchange basic writing assignments, which makes the writing worthwhile. I also got her a flip book with silly writing prompts which she is considering using, but hasn't yet. She asked me why I bought it because she hates writing and wouldn't use it. But after looking at it, she said she thought it was funny and would give it a try. I don't know that my daughter will ever get to a place where a writing curriculum will work for her. But, I find many ways to get her to write in everyday life, so it does not seem like school and she is still gaining the writing skills that she will need in the future.
Writing Strands seems to be one of the popular choices for homeschool writing, but I think as with any curriculum you use, you may need to supplement it with other things. Never feel you have to follow a curriculum ver·batim . You are the teacher. You decide what is important to you and follow your heart. You know what is best for your children and don't let anyone else tell you otherwise. |

| We use the Abeka writing, phonics and reading program. I think is very complete, and has poetry, vocabulary and grammar. |

Hi Jo-Anne,
I am using three different materials for my first grade son that were recommended in the book the well trained mind http://www.welltrainedmind.com . So far they are working well for us. (If I had to categorize our approach/style I'd say we were eclectic homeschoolers.)
They are: First Language Lesson (a small book that covers grammar for 1st and 2nd graders). Most of the work is oral which is great for kids who are not writing well yet. Each lesson takes about 15 minutes max.
Spelling Workout A. These are workbooks that progress through each grade level. Each lesson is 4 pages long (we take two days to cover), and uses a list base of words and various problems (missing words, rhyming, etc).
Worldly Wise A. Again another series that progress through the years. A for first grade, B for second grade, etc. This is simply a list of words and their definitions, along with pictures. We write one word a day on the board. After getting through the list (about two weeks), there are three pages of puzzles that cover the word list (true or false, hidden message, crossword puzzle). Dane really enjoys the "Word of the Day".
I also have him read a story a day out of a reader... there are lots of great ones out there.
If you have any questions or would like more info on any of these I'd be happy to talk with ya.
Good luck in finding what works for you! I know it can be frustrating at first but it's also half the fun!
