The Erna Fergussen library offers "library adventures" for homeschoolers to help introduce kids to the library's resources. I've scheduled an "adventure" for next Monday, Jan 9th, and would like to invite homeschoolers ages 6-10 to attend, subject to space available. Children attending should be able to read. Younger siblings may come to the community room with parents, where the library will supply activity sheets.

If interested, please reply here soon (I need a headcount for the library ASAP) and I'll get back to you with more details.

This should last about 1 hour and includes Adventure #1 (Search for Treasure: How are books organized in the library? Includes a Dewey Decimal Scavenger Hunt ) and Adventure #2 (Master the Online Catalog: Tips and tricks for looking up books.)

Directions: Erna Fergussen library (3700 San Mateo NE, 888-8100) is one block south of Comanche on the east side of the street.

NOTE  Passing this along from the librarian: Please do not resolve library card issues (applications, renewals, etc) on the day of the class, as this creates stress for the librarians.

When you say "able to read", what are we talking about.  My daughter is just begining to read on her own but still needs some assistance from me.

What time is this scheduled for -- we may be able to come. Sounds really useful. Could you put us down for 1 attending ( and I'll look after the little one at the activity sheets table). Thanks.

You can put me down tentatively--assuming it's after 10 am. I'll bring 2 kids: 6 and 8.

I assume, given the age range presented, they mean "able to read like a typical first or second grader." Meaning easy readers independently, or some help with easy "chapter books."

I'm not teaching the class, so I can't say for sure what reading level will be needed. However, I understand that there will be written information (maybe for the scavenger hunt?) where names of authors and/or titles of books may need to be read and then located in the library. Something along those lines, anyway. Beyond introducing the kids to the different sections of the library, most of the skills needed for using library resources involve some reading. I'm told it will be geared for the youngest readers (1st, 2nd grade).

Chell, I tried to email you, but sending to your registered email "mwarmino@quixnet.net" bounced back to me.
