Hi all,

I noticed that the zoo has its schedule of summer classes online.  They seem a tad bit on the pricey side to me.  It has got me thinking about other stuff to do.  Not that we can't just go to the zoo. . .

In Sioux Falls there was a program put on by the game fish and parks dept.  They offered weekly hour long sessions for free all thru the year that covered a range of topics.  Nothing really terribly exciting, but it gave a us a time to get out and do something different with other people and it was FREE!  Is there anything like that here that anyone can think of?

Free or not, as long as it is not unreasonable.  The thing i liked the best was that parents were welcome, even with the older kids.

Hi Karen, the zoo/aquarium programs are expensive, but I've heard they're very good. We go to the free weekly nature talks/walks up at Elena Gallegos in the summer time. They are on a variety of topics, once they had hawks, another time it was walking around looking for birds, etc. I think they start at 7pm and are on a weekday. Sorry to be so vague, I always find out about them when they happen, through the newspaper or NM Kids magazine.

And copying from our fieldtrip info page: "The Rio Grande Nature Center (2901 Candelaria NW, 344-7240 ) has Nature Discovery Backpacks for home school groups, filled with different learning tools and activities to use on the trail. Call to reserve. Three diffierent backpacks: "Five Alive (senses)" for young children, "Small Stuff (magnifiers)" for elementary age, and "Weather or Not (weather measurement instruments)" for late elementary to midschool age. Homeschoolers can also schedule aquatic ecology classes at the pond with a volunteer interpreter; a staff park member is available to lead a bosque riparian ecology walk for groups of post-preschool age. They also have a outreach program. Staff and volunteer interpreters will bring traveling trunks to your meeting site. They have nine different trunks depending on the age group and interest of your group. Bird Trunk, Mammal Trunk, Arthropod Trunk, Reptile and Amphiban Trunk, Bosque Model trunk, Cottonwood Trunk, Botany Trunk, Bat Resource Trunk, and Geology of Albuquerque Trunk. They also have a Junior Ranger program."

Wildlife West Nature Park has docent guided cours of its 120+ acre wildlife refuge. It's out in Edgewood. Admission is like $5 adult, less for kids.

Another fun thing they do on a monthly basis are full moon walks with a naturalist, which is one of our favorites.
