 Activities for a 5 yr. old in Rio Rancho? (currently 978 views) |

I’m looking for classes or programs that would be
1) Suitable for a new five year old (she turns five on 8/3) to join
2) In the Rio Rancho area.
3) Cost under $75/month
4) Not church/religion related
I think she would enjoy something physical like martial arts or gymnastics. But art classes, a 4-H group, or something similar would be great too. I’m looking into swimming lessons at the West Mesa pool (I think that’s what it is called) too.
I don’t know if she is too young for 4-H or not. I’ve tried to find info about joining or a contact for our area, but haven’t had any luck – maybe I’m looking in the wrong place?
I know there are tons of things in Albuquerque, but with the cost of gas and the drag of drive-time, I’d like something closer to home (we are off Unser past Northern).

Sounds like you live really close to Crystal & Sorscha.
We are in Enchanted Hills, between NM 550 & NM 528.
Have you checked Rio Rancho Cultural Enrichment Programs?
They've already come out with their summer catalog of classes and activities.
We plan on signing up for the Homeschool PE classes this fall
for my sons again. And my daughter will sign up for the Tumbling Classes.
Rio Rancho's Enrichment programs cover everything from Swimming, Sports, Scrapbooking, Art Academy, Ballet, Gymnastics, Theater, Guitar and Music, Ceramics, Photography, Painting, Beading...and all sorts of art medium lessons.
None of the classes are over $50.00 and most are under $30.00.

I also have a contact and details for 4-H if you are interested in that, too:
They have a small club of 4-H'ers 'ages 9-18' and 4 cloverbuds 'ages 5-8'. 4-H is for boys and girls and their main focus is leadership and "learn by doing" 4-H is a kid run program with the adults as supervisors.
The club (the West Mesa Desert Willows) meets on the second and fourth Thursdays from 6:30-8:30pm.
When you join 4-H you choose 1-3 projects -there are over 100 to choose from (of course there's animals, leathercraft, rocketry, shooting, citizenship to name a few). You can work on the projects on your own or join up with other 4-H'ers. The goal is to complete your projects to show in the County Fair.
The cost is $25 per 4-H'er per year. That covers: enrollment, the first three project books, insurance, snacks, a T=shirt, and entry fees for the County Fair.
Rules: you should commit to attending most of the monthly meetings and that at least one parent should accompany the children. It's not a drop off program. Parent participating is required.

Thank you so much! I've sent an email off to Jennifer and I look forward to hearing from her.
I didn't realize they ran the Cultural Enrichment programs during the fall, I thought it was a "summer only" kind of program. The fall schedule will be out in mid-August and I'm sure we can find something for her there also!
Are parents able to stay and watch the classes? I'd feel strange dropping her off and leaving, but I've heard some programs are run that way. |

Glad I was able to help a little.
Yes, parents are usually always welcome for the classes. Just check ahead of time regarding the specific class you sign up for.
In fact, the Homeschool PE class was fun because many of the parents
hung out and chatted with each while our younger toddlers played on the playground
together. It was a nice way to meet some fellow homeschoolers that way. |

Do you know what the birthdate cut off is for 4 H or is it just something you can jump in when they turn 5? My oldest will be five on 9/20.
Gwendolyn, do you live in Northern Meadows? That is where we are, way out in the middle of the desert  The Rio Rancho programs are good and I have never been to one where the parents were discouraged from staying with the kids. I think the Homeschool PE is for ages 6 and up. We have tried the art class, baseball, swimming, the "bug class" and gymnastics and Harrison has enjoyed all of them. I have been anxious for the new catalog to come out so I can get him in something new as well as maybe trying tumbling or something else for my twins this time around.

In case you might be interested - there's also the homeschool ice skating lessons at Blades multiplex - they are $10 or so a lesson - I think it's $80 for 8 weeks. The kids have a 1/2 hour lesson then can skate for the rest of the 4 hour session.

Jo-Anne, do you know the ages for the skating lessons? Can you rent skates or do you need your own?
