HI, I don't know if I was to start a new thread for a new question?(will have to get to understand this forum better)
Both my son and I have chronic asthma (yes, lungers). Our MD mentioned to be careful about the Cocciodiomycosis spore found in the soil/sand of the midwest. Mostly prevalent in Phoenix Ar., and San Jouaquin valley, Cal, but in all areas of deserts.
He basically said, don't dig in the sand.
How prevalent is it, and do you know of anyone who has dealt with this?
Too late, we are on our way out in mid December.and quite thrilled! |

It's funny you mentioned this - I just took care of a patient with Valley fever.

Now, I have asthma and so does my son. I grew up in NM and live in Los Lunas with lots and lots of loose dust and wind and new construction to stir up spores. Digging in sand/dirt is not anymore of a risk than going outside and breathing the air when the wind is stirred up. The worst times for me are late fall and early spring - but that's not only because of wind but other pollens etc in the air. Just like anywhere else, it is important to have a good/clean air filter in your heating and cooling ducts. Keep dust and dirt down in your home, avoid the allergens that cause you difficulty and be cautious about going outside on windy days. That's just general for any asthmatic - however something to remember is that we are at no more of a risk than a healthy individual. Granted, once exposed there are a few more complications. Depending upon what elevation you're coming from Albuquerque might also be difficult on you at first. Something else to consider - people are warned about the South because of the mold, the West because of Valley Fever, the North and East because of the cold, large cities because of transmission rates of infectious diseases and viruses, rural communities because of access to healthcare. Basically you pick your own poison.
