 What should I kno before beginning to homeschool? (currently 853 views) |

I am amazed that I am deciding to homeschool! 3 years ago I told my father there was NO WAY I would ever consider homeschooling my kids, cause I just could not do it. I was not meant to do THAT and I wanted to go back to school myself when the kids reached school age. Why would I want to keep them at home when I could let someone who is trained and has a teaching degree handle it.
That was then. A lot has changed in the last 3 years, including my veiws on homeschooling. The Lord layed it on my heart that it was something I needed to be open to considering. Before I really considered it, I looked into private schools - only to find that SURPRISE...there is no way we could afford it. I knew that even before I looked. I guess I just felt that maybe I would check prices on the special 4 kids for the price of 1 day or something. Yeah right...but, There is no way I could homeschool.
OK Lord, I will consider it. I began looking into homeschooling about 6 months ago. I went to one of CAPE's getting started workshops and then added myself to the different mailing lists for homeschoolers. As I began to really consider homeschooling I began seeing that this is what God wants for me to do. Everything since that point has only confirmed that and stregnthened my resolve to begin this journey.
Even though I know this is what God wants me to do and I know that He WILL PROVIDE, I feel unsure of where to start. I want to make certain that everything is in place by fall. So, I figure I will ask the pros. What do I need to know before I get started? What are some helpful hints/tips that you can offer? What do you know now that you wish you knew before you began homeschooling?
Just for information sake...my step-daughter is 9 and in 3rd grade, (will be in 4th grade next year), I have twin boys that I will begind 3 yr old preschool with next year and a 9 month old boy.
Also, besides this group are there any co-ops, support groups or other homeschool groups that you are involved in or would recommend? I know there are many different type of groups out there and to tell you the truth am not sure exactly what I am looking for, but would love to check out as many as possible.

| Glad to have you on board, what part of town do you live in, that would help out as far as recommending other groups. I have a 3 year old daughter as well as 5 more older than that, just for your info. Maybe we could meet up at a park sometime. Let me know where you are and I can give you some more info. |

We homeschool our two older ones. 1st grade this year and my daughter has started kindergarten work (though officially not in kindergarten until the fall). What has helped me has been to stay with one curriculum for all the subjects. I know many people who use different books for different subjects and seem to do OK but I figured I needed to stick with one so I wasn't moving around too much. Also it helped me because I didn't feel like I was leaving out subjects. It all depends on your teaching style. (Which will probably change a few times too). I'm just the kind of person who needs to be VERY organized or we begin to fall behind. With our curriculum we are sent a daily planner to follow which isn't set in stone, but it helps to know what kind of pace we should be trying to follow. You also may want to ask around at your church to see who else homeschools. That way you have other families who have a lot in common with you. This homeschool co-op is very nice because there are so many actvities for the kids, but if you can get together with other families from your church on a more regular basis that's nice. Hope this helps.

| We currently live in Paradise Hills, but should be moving this summer. I know we will be staying in or around Albuquerque, but other than that only God knows. It all depends on where we can find the right size house at a price we can afford. I think we will probably concentrate our efforts in the Near NE Heights and East Mountain areas, but have also considered the Unser/Ladera area on the West side. My husband works for UNMH and wants to find something that is convinient for work. Not necessarily close, but if not close - atleast quick, (like right off I-40). |

I am in the East Mtns myself and am involved in several groups here. There is the CHEF group which meets in Moriarty and has a meeting once a month (with childcare). They do activities and fieldtrips and also have a tag group for older kids, (your 9 year old) that one month will do a community project and the next will have a fun activity for the kids, ie: Hinkle Family Fun Ctr. There are no dues for this group, just mostly input and help.
There is the MACHE group, that has a $20.00 annual due and family statement of faith, to receive their newsletter. They don't do as many activities but more mom's meetings, or choir, history/science fairs.
I am also in a group based out of Los Lunas, VAFE, (we moved here a little over 3 years ago). They have $18.00 annual dues for their newsletters and do things all over NM, we just recently went to Bandera Volcano Caves located outside Grants. They have a ton of activities, like Valentine Parties, Easter Egg Hunts, Talent Show/Project Fairs, etc.
There's a web site and right now I can't remember it, that will help you find more groups (there's a ton). I'll find it and post it asap. If you want the web addresses for these I've mentioned, once you know where your going to live, email me or call me and I'll get them for you.

Okay, got it, it's http://www.rghomeschooling.org, infact Chris Tucker is a contributer to this group and has spoke of an upcoming conference under announcements on this site. Again this site lists many different groups in the albuq. and surronding areas.
