Hi All, I've organized a PE class for homeschoolers in conjunction with the PE department at the University of New Mexico. In essence, we would be helping out the students who are majoring in PE by providing a group of children for them to work with in return for receiving a great, free PE class. The student teachers break the children up into groups and do some cool movement activities, etc., with them. The benefits include a good student teacher ratio, the use of a wide range of equipment, and of course, it's free.
The class time is Thursdays, 8:45 - 9:15 am on campus at Johnson Center (across from Popejoy Hall off Central). The dates are October 7th through December 9th, not including Thanksgiving and fall break, for a total of 8 classes. The professor would need the kids there and ready to go at 8:45, which means that you’d probably need to be on campus no later than 8:30 by the time you park, walk in, etc.
Although there is no charge for the program, there is a charge for parking. Parking costs $1 for up to one hour and $2 for up to two hours. So depending on how fast you are getting to the class and back again you may be able to do it all in one hour. The parking structure is right next to Johnson center so at least it's convenient. I tried to get us parking passes, but to no avail. Parking services are pretty strict.
They are asking for a class size of 20 to 30 children, ages 5-11. However, for siblings under the age of 5, they are going to provide a parent-tot group in which a student will oversee participation by the parents and children together in an activity. We need a firm commitment from those interested as they will be scheduling UNM class time to run the program, so we would need to be pretty reliable.
If you are interested in participating, please email me (exerscience@earthlink.net) with the number of children and their ages. For those of you who have already contacted me, I have you down on the list so no need to contact me again unless you are no longer interested.
I believe that there is an ongoing PE class offered to homeschoolers for a fee. I don't want to infringe upon that as I think that it's great; I just wanted to offer a free alternative to those that may be interested.

What curriculum will the students be using to teach our children? Can parents preview it?
If not curriculum, are they making lesson plans for whatever activity they are going to teach, and can those also be previewed?
Thank you!!! |

Hi Sharon, Sharon, I have a question that I hope you won't be upset if I ask - I'm still trying to figure out how this website and the co-op itself work. I have 3 kids, ages 6, 3, and 3 months, and I am very interested in the UNM PE for homeschoolers. However, my oldest son will be going to Family School this fall in the afternoons. There was quite a lot of rancorous debate earlier this summer about whether Family Schoolers would be allowed in the co-op or not, and I believe the decision was "not", but Elizabeth did say that the bulletin board would still be available to the general homeschool-interested public. Is that the case with this class, and could my kid(s) attend, or is it restricted to only actual co-op members? Thanks! Mariel Campbell |

| Hi Mariel, I thought I would answer this for Sharon, since I read it first. Sharon originally posted about the PE class on the co-op members only board, to give them a chance to sign up. She wanted to be sure that they all had a chance to join before opening it up to the homeschooling community at large. Since the class didn't fill up, she's inviting non-members to sign up by posting about it on the public forum. |

Thanks Elizabeth for answering that and you're welcome! I'm looking forward to it also. I'll check with the instructor on the lesson plan issue and post back. Sharon |

Hi Kelly, No, sorry I haven't had a chance to yet. Alot of the instructors are on holiday until the fall semester starts up but I will definitely try and contact her next week to see if she has some sort of schedule. Thanks for your interest! Take Care, Sharon |

Hi Kelly - I've posted to this thread also in case others are following this one,
Sorry for the delay in getting back with you. I've attached the response of the professor heading up the class below.
"The curriculum would cover the fundamental movements of Locomotion, Non-locomotion, Manipulation and the application of movement concepts of Space, Effort and Relationships to those skill themes. The activities would be developmentally appropriate for the skill level of the children in each group."
Hope this answers your questions. Let me know if you'd like me to add you to the list for the class. Thanks and take care Sharon |
