Have any of you taken your child out of public school to homeschool them? Was it difficult? Any "legal" problems in doing so? I have a friend who is going through this right now and she doesn't really know what to do...She doesn't want any legal problems, but her child desperately needs to get out of the current situation.

I have another question...do all of you submit the "Intent to Homeschool" form to the school district? It seems like HSLDA mentions that it is required however I get the impression that they think NM doesn't need to know names and ages of children being homeschooled. Does anyone have any feedback about this???

Thanks for your input!

Denise, my understanding is that your friend needs to file the Intent within 30 days of removing her child from school. I read somewhere (maybe the old CAPE-NM web site?), that you're within your legal rights to leave the names and ages of your children off of the Intent form because nothing in the law of NM specifically requires you to supply this info, but they didn't recommend doing so. (It may be a little dicey to stand up for your rights if you want things to proceed smoothly.) I'm sorry I can't remember the exact source of that info, so take it with a grain of salt.

There are no legal problems for pulling your child out of a public school.  I'd advise her to do so IMMEDIATLY and then go vote Feb. 1 NO NO NO!  We shouldn't give a failing system more money

Denise, I took Jonathan out of public school and began homeschooling him the very next day! I submitted the intent letter over the internet and never had any problems whatsoever!
