Groups around ABQ (currently 1,170 views) |

There are lots of homeschooling/young children's groups around ABQ, and I know that many of us are members of multiple ones, and I was wondering if it was ok to discuss our experiences here. For example, I know that there are at least these:
-MOPS (Christian, not HS specifically) -MOMS (ditto) -OLE -GOAL -ABQ HS Science Club -CAPE-NM (Christian, not sure if this is just and action group or not)
Personally, I've had a very good experience with one group and found out another was not what it initially said that it was. Is this an appropriate topic for this board? |

i'd like to hear more about the groups too. I'm not too familiar with the one's you listed other than MOPS & CAPE_NM. I attend a co-op at desert springs church and next fall Tramway community Church will have a co-op also. |

| I really like OLE! They DO meet in the East Mountains since they're set up as an E Mts support group, but people from other areas are welcome if they're willing to drive. |

Genevieve, thanks for asking whether this was appropriate to post about. If anyone has anything positive to say about any parenting groups, they are welcome to post here.
On the other hand, while some of you might care to hear about negative experiences with particular groups, I discourage you from sharing them on this board. Complaints can be interpreted personally too easily, and then degenerate into mudslinging, which could get the "slingers" banned from the board.
I've been a member of MOMS Club, a non-homeschooling secular group for parents of young kids, for almost 3 years and recommend it highly. We have lots of activities for preschoolers: playgroups, parties, tours, mno, potlucks, etc. There are many chapters in ABQ, however, and each chapter has its own flavor, and you must join the one for your zip code, so your mileage may vary. |

Whoops! I've never been to MOMS and I thought it was a grown-up MOPS for some reason. *g*
I forgot anothe group--Tumbleweeds. They meet in ABQ proper...northwest side, I think?
How often does MOMS meet? I haven't found any local websites. |

| My particular chapter of MOMS Club, which is for 87109 zip code, has about 40 members and usually has some activity (often something simple like meet at park, go to zoo) every week day. All the chapters are different, though. You can probably find out about what chapter would be the one in your area by going to http://www.momsclub.org . |

I am a member of MOPs and I look forward to my evening breaks from the kids and chance to chat with other moms. Most of these groups meet during the day, but our group moved to evenings this year. It is the only evening group in this area. There are also a couple other homeschool moms in the group I am in. Everyone is real supportive and honest. It is nice to know that you are not the only one that has faced some of the simple everyday challenges and those large ones as well. There is hope to be found in sharing. Our group meets the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month Sept - May, but we are on a break this month for a special program going on at the church we meet at. One benefit of being an evening group is that it does not take away time from all the other homeschooling activities and such. If anyone is interested in further information, feel free to email me.
I have also attended GOAL. They are a laid back group which seems to appeal more toward families with late elementary age children. There are some younger ones, but I did not feel this group fit my younger ones. It seemed to be more of a playgroup for the kids. Jordan seemed to enjoy it, so we might go when the boys are not with us. I know they have some other activities beside their Friday playdays, but I do not think they are very regular. We have not attended any of these, so I do not have much input.
I was in MOMs club when I was in Paradise Hills and it was nice. They kept a pretty active calendar going, so you could almost always find something to do when you wanted to get out of the house. They were very well organized and even had a babysitting co-op that I used a couple of times. One of the first people that gave me the information that helped us decide to homeschool was someone I met in this group. I know every group is different, but deffinetely a group worth checking out if you are looking for activities to keep you and your kids busy. The only reason we have not checked out the club for this area is that we do not have timne to get involved.
I know I went to a information meeting put on by CAPE about how to get started homeschooling and it was helpful. They also put on the annual Homeschool convention, which I missed last year because of scheduling issues, but plan to attend this year. I have heard many wonderful things about it. I have yet to join and receive their newsletters, so I am not sure what all they have in them. However, my understanding is that they are more of a resource. Besides the info meetings and convention, I do not believe they do any activities or events. Those that are more familiar with CAPE - Please correct me if I am wrong.
I think the main thing to consider when picking out a group for you and your family is how involved you can get. How comfortable with the group are you and do you feel you can get involved in the group. In most cases, you get out of a group exactly what you put in to it. If you just show up to the meetings, you will probably leave with close to nothing. If you play an active role in a group, you will benefit much more. There are many types of groups out there and no one will fit everyone. You may have to "try a few on" before you find the one(s) that is/are right for you. |

Thank you for the MoMs link, I have been looking for a group in my zip. I went to the website and sent my email to join so hopefully the kids and I will get a chance to meet you all some time soon. I even took the precaution of putting the groups website in my Favorites so I do not forget it. Once again thank you and have a great weekend coming up.
