Back To School New Mexico Gross Receipts Tax Holiday August 5 -7, 2005 New Mexico shoppers will get a break on state and local taxes on August 5-7 – during the state’s first “Back to School” gross receipts tax holiday. Nontaxable items include: clothing and footwear under $100, school supplies such as pens and paper - that are typically used in a classroom setting - computers under $1,000, assorted computer equipment under $500. Excluded from the tax holiday are accessories such as watches, wallets, handbags and a specific list of supplies such as sports equipment, or clothing specifically designed for athletic wear. Participation in the Back to School Gross Receipts Holiday is voluntary. Retailers are not required to participate. If a retailer chooses not to participate - you will be required to pay gross receipts tax on your purchases. Below is a selected list of items that are not taxed during the tax holiday period. For a complete list of items that are exempt from taxes during the tax holiday go to: http://www.state.nm.us/tax and click on Tax Holiday item list. Clothing, Footwear and Accessories (Under $100) Aerobic clothing Baby clothes & diapers Belts with and without buckles attached Boots, general purpose (winter, dress, cowboy) Book bags Camp clothing Caps and hats, including sports Coats and wraps Dresses Jeans Jogging apparel Neckties, scarves Overshoes, rubber shoes Pajamas Pants Raincoats Shoes Shirts Sleepwear Suits, slacks, jackets & sports coats Under garments Back to school Items (Individual or unit (packaged items) Under $15) Assignment books Art supplies Backpack (for school) Calculators Chalk Clipboards Construction paper Colored pencils Compasses Composition books Crayons Daily planner Divider folders Flash cards Glue Highlighters Lunchboxes Notebooks Paper Pens, pencils Rulers, Scissors Computers & Related Items (Computers under $1000) (Computer equipment under $500) CDs (Blank) Computer, desktop, laptop or notebook Computer cables, hard drive and key board Computer memory equipment (disks, jump drives) Computer microphones & speakers Computer modems & motherboards Computer monitor Computer mouse Computer printer Printer paper |

Hello Friends,
I was able to find out a few of the stores that have confirmed they will be participating. There are other stores, but they have not contacted the Taxation Dept. to let them know they will be participating. The stores that have contacted the Taxation Dept are:
Wal-mart
Office Depot
JCPenneys
Sam’s Club
Target
Dillards
Macys
Foleys
Sears
Mervyns
Best Buy

| Learning Is Fun is participating in this event. They have a long list of items that fall under the "no tax' for this weekend, however, books are not on the list. |
