I don't often post here, but I read alot, and now I have some questions I'm sure some of you can help me with! I'm a new homeschooler, and amazed at the amount of material is out there! Is anyone familiar with Language Arts Through Literature? I've also looked at writingsstrands.com and I'm torn! Ever use Miquon Math materials? And what about Lifepac Science? It looks like a really great course, and very comprehensive, but I'm concerned about how heavy the religious content is. (As in I'm not comfortable with too much).
I'm looking for my 2nd grader, and I've really enjoyed the comments in the "Curriculum for my 2nd grader" thread, but since I have more specific questions, I thought I'd go this way!
Thanks in advance!

| I have looked at Writing Strands and am considering using it myself this year, but do not have any experience with it. However, we used Lifepacs last year and they did not work for us. The material was too dry for us and I had not planned anything really to supplement the workbooks. We quickly discontinued them and are doing things differently this year. I know that there are people that these work very well for, but they just weren't a fit for us. If you decide to use them, you may want to look into materials and activities to supplement the workbooks with. |

My homeschooling sister used Miquon Math for a year or two. She said her kids didn't like all the repetition and she switched to Singapore math, which they love. The Sonlight site has a nice overview of several homeschooling math programs, including both Miquon and Singapore, and whether you buy from their site or not it's interesting. The upshot is that different approaches work well for different kids. My son loves variety and loses interest if we stick with the same thing (say, fractions) too long. So we use and enjoy Singapore math, but even with that I need to skip around a little bit in the book to give him the variety he likes. Other kids seem to like to stick with one thing for a while, because practicing enough to do one thing well gives them confidence.
If you want to check out the Sonlight take on various math programs, go here: http://www.sonlight.com/?1197 and click on the Products/By Subject link and then Math. You can see a description of each math program by clicking on the name on the left. |

Thanks for the advice! I've scratched off Lifepac, although still looking for a good science curriculum, and I think we'll go with Singapore Math. I liked how I could print out sample workbook pages and test my son's level! Since Pathway is an entire package curriculum, I won't use that, as I want to piece ours together.
thanks! Jen |
