| I need help with getting information regarding speech therapy for my 5 year old. Just some background, Jacob had gone through Child Find and received speech therapy at Matheson Park. Now, I spoke with a woman name Cindi SooHoo and she told me that they do not offer services for homeschooled children because there is not enough money to be able to do it because they have already 80 students in the program, at least for this school year 2005-2006. I guess they vote on this every year. I don't know how this all works so I feel like I am in the dark. If anyone has any information about this, I really appreciate it. Thank you so much!! |

Ok, here's what I'm finding. Whether or not you can receive services, depends on the state. Here's a link at the HSLDA website.

My bet is that NM has stricter restrictions on who can receive speech services than the fed regulations stipulate. You may NOT be able to receive services. I'm sorry if I gave you bad information at the park. I really thought they were required to provide assistance. I'm quite irritated, actually, that they are not.
Interestingly they recommend that you NOT use the school district's services for legal reasons.

Hi Joanne, That was my experience also. Dane was in speech therapy for two years prior to kindergarten (age 3 and 4). But when kindergarten rolled around and we didn't enroll in PS, our services were dropped. I did love his therapist at PS though and she also runs her own business in which she'll come to your house weekly, biweekly, etc and provide services. A year ago, her price was $50 for the hour I believe... kind of pricey but no more than any other professional service by the hour. Anyway, if you'd like me to send you her name, let me know. Granted it was another state, but I was able to have this situation reversed in VA where they off NO services to homeschoolers in our old county. The sticking point that I got them on was that according to the law I was able to hold my son back a year for kindergarten as the law said he didnt HAVE to regiter until he was 6. So I purposely did not register him as a homeschooler so they couldnt deny his services. I met with the superintendents rep and she had to agree that the law had to cover us until such a time as registration in the schools became a requirement. You might want to investigate it as we received a years worth of speech services (60 minutes per week) free of charge. Ifyou have questions, email me. Again it may not be so here in Albuquerque, however if you dont ahve to register for school until later, and you dont register him as a homeschooler, you may have a loop-hole.

| Aaaahhh. No, if Kari's suggestion works, you're actually able to hold off registering your child for school here in NM until they are 7 years old. Although I do think there's another form you need to fill out explaining why you're delaying, or at least stating you're delaying. |

| Oh, that reminded me that I do know several wonderful speech/language therapists in the district who do work outside of school. Let me know if you are interested and I'll put you in touch! |

I also thought that they were required to provide these services. I have the paperwork that they gave me when Jordan was enrolled in APS somewhere and I am still thinking that is said something about them being required to provide the services. I could be incorrect in thinking this and misunderstood something, but I know that is what I was thinking both times I received the literature from them. I will find it and let you know what I find.
Julie and Sharon- If they do not provide services, I should probably speak to you guys about getting those names and numbers for Jordan. If you could email them to me I would appreciate it. Thanks! |

Hi Ladies,
We have a friend that is a Speech Therapist through APS and my husband just talked with her and she is going to check into it. She also beleives that APS by law, is to continue to treat Jacob. She will get back to me. I also emailed Heather Wilson, to see if she could help me with this situation. I have emailed her before and she does email back herself sooo hopefully she can help me. Whatever info I get back, I will relay it to you all. Thank you for all your help. |

Please post here if you can. I have two children who have existing IEP, or ISP as it is for homeschoolers and if they can get services Iwould be very interested in looking into the quality and possiblility of doing so.
We had such a wonderful therapist before, and she gave me a lot of ideas on how to continue her work at home, but if this works out without too much of a battle (ugh) I would love to check it out too.

| Thanks for doing that Joanne. By what I understood it was atleast they were required to continue providing services for a child who was previously receiving services through public school. I don't think I ever heard of them being required for any child that never attended and received services through APS, but it is so hard to say either way. I just wish I could remember where I put the paperwork that they'd given me with Jordan's speech therapy. If I find it I will add the info in it to this thread. |

| Someone just posted on the public part of the forum about speech therapy advice... Would anyone mind if I moved this thread to the public part of the board so she could see it? It might be easier than typing out the same responses again, but if you don't want your post on te public part of the board, that's ok, just thought I'd ask. |
