Hi there

I have an (almost) 3 yr old and am looking to start "purposful" homeschool activities...i.e. strucured or semi-structures.  I was wondering if anyone could help me.  I called the community centre etc and with the exception of signing him up for preschool from 7:30-5pm everyday they said they had no activities.  We are new to the area and my little guy needs some interaction....  Thanks i=for your help!

Hi. I have a three year old also. I am still learning about what to do in Alb, but recently ran across a preschool/adult class at the NM Natural History museum. Sounds like fun. It may be on their website, but I am not sure.

Explora, the children's science museum, offers preschool classes called, I think, Growing a Scientist. We did them when my son was 3-4, and I think they were well done.

I'm not sure if they're ongoing during the winter time, or just in spring/summer, but the zoo & aquarium also offer preschool classes that are supposed to be very good.

In both cases, I think they are shorter classes designed to have a parent attending as well. Somewhat expensive, though.

I have been looking into the same thing. So far, I have found:

Explora, Growing a Scientist (Elizabeth already mentioned this)
Prehistoric Preschool at the Natural History Museum
UNM Music Prep School (music classes on Saturdays)
Museum school --some kind of art classes put on by the Albuquerque Museum. I haven't called them yet to ask about it, so I'm not sure what they do.

All of these are for preschool children and an adult partner and cost $$. The libraries have free storytimes and arts and crafts for preschoolers.

The Nature Center also has classes, mostly for elementary age, but occasionally for preschool age accompanied by parent.

I did take my son at that age to some storytimes at bookstores.  Can't remember if it was only Bound To Be Read--which, unfortunately is shut down now.  Maybe, Page One.

We did Natural History Museum and Explora.  They were both great!

Also, swimming lessons at a city pool is pretty reasonably priced, summer only, but their preschool classes are fun for both child and parent. Some of the pools offer Parent/Tot classes where the parent gets in the pool with their child.  Registration is in middle April, I think.

If you are religious, try your religious institution.  They often have "classes" or camps during winter break, spring break, and summer vacation, according to the APS schedule.  We did a one week camp last winter break at a synagogue-he did learn a lot.

I hope this helps.
