Sorry - not sure if this REALLY applies to homeschooling - but thought someone might be able to make a suggestion.
We have seen Dr. Shaw and really didn't care for some of her policies about parents being present.  Then, we saw Dr. Belthon - let's just say VERY unhappy and WOULD NOT recommend to treat a stray dog - (if you wonder why, email me off list).  I'm looking for a good pediadontist for my kids.  We have good dental insurance and can go about anywhere.  I've heard good things about the Mecklers has anyone gone to them and would you reccommend them for a child that has been traumatized by a lousy dentist?
Thanks,
JoAnne

I would NOT recommend Dr. Galbreth to a stray dog, either, BTW.

I'm not much help, though.  I've found a merely adequate dentist now.

I have gone to the Mecklers for several years and have had a good experience.  I recommend the dad, Joesph.  Other people I have talked to, however, only like the son, Gary.  I have also talked to people that did not like them at all.  In my opinion they were very good with my children.
If you don't specifically need a children's dentist I recommend Marc Pachanco (sp?).  He is on the Westside.  He is very nice, professional and I have never felt the typical pressure to have unnecessary expensive procedures.  He also works on children.
Good luck.  I know that bad experiences with the dentist are something we all want to avoid with our children (and ourselves).

Try Dr. Tom Lynch just east of San Pedro and Montgomery NE in Albuquerque, NM.  My family has been using him for quite a long time.

Very good dentist, they double sterilize their instruments including with autoclave.

I found him by a friend recommending an orthodontist for braces for my kids, then asked the orthodontist for a recommendation for a general dentist.

Good luck,
Leon

My kids (6 and 4) love Rose Mary Twohig. She and her hygenists are very sweet and caring. I don't know what the policies are on parents being present for certain procedures, but I've always been allowed to be in the room with my kids (for cleanings and fillings).

She has an office on Montgomery, between San Pedro and Louisiana.

I'm also really leery of kids dentists now, and haven't found a good one, so I'd love to read recommendations.

The one recommended by our general dentist for my kids ... well, I just found it very disturbing to be told that kids would be threatened with parents being sent from the room if they misbehaved, the "restraint jackets" used for certain procedures, and the reliance on pre-drugging the kid to make them calmer. This was a discussion we had after they'd given a brief exam to my son, who was a very compliant and quiet the whole time, and only had a minor cavity that needed filling. We just decided to keep the cavity (in a baby tooth) and forget the dentist.

I posted this to other thread too, so please forgive me if you've already heard me singing the praises of Rose Mary Twohig.

So yes, Rose Mary Twohig is our dentist and my kids (4 and 6) adore her. She and her hygenists are very sweet. I was allowed to be in the room for the cleanings and fillings. The kids got to choose the flavor of the toothpaste, and later the flavor of fluoride. After they finished, Dr. Twohig offered them gifts--stickers and tattoos for cleanings and the choice of a small toy for fillings. LOL, they keep asking me when they can go back!

I don't know what her policies are regarding misbehavior.  Our initial conversation went something like, "This is my childrens' first trip to the dentist and they are a little nervous. I'd like to be present." And she said, "Of course you can."  And that was it--no threats, no restraints, sedatives, etc.

Her office is on Montgomery, between San Pedro and Louisiana.

I have a good general dentist, who sees pediatrics, and he is VERY gentle and VERY good with anxiety (my husband had MAJOR anxiety and hadn't seen a dentist in like 16 years and LOVES Dr. Mcquew)  I was just thinking it might be easier on the kids to go to an actual pediadontist.  I'm sure Dr. McQuew would be great with the kids, but my daughter is pretty anxious after her experiences with Dr. Belthon (again wouldn't let him treat the neighborhood stray dog!).
Out of curiosity - what have you heard is the reason people prefer the son/father more at the Mecklers?
Thanks,
Jo-Anne

We have tried several dentists too.  They all seem to want the parents out of the room.  Maybe we'll try Rose Mary Twohig.  Thanks for the info!

Elizabeth-I'm curious which dentist you went to.   We had a similar experience.  I'd like to find someone good so we can have some consistency.

I would highly recommend our family dentist, Dr. Robert Kelly.  He is located on Louisiana just south of Montgomery.  His number is 881-2421.  He saw my daughter age 3 for the first time in September and was very patient and gentle with her, as she was very curious.  I have been seeing him myslef for over 2 years and would never want to go anywhere else.  I currently do not have dental insurance and he allows me to pay monthly towards my bill.  I know that they take most kinds of insurance.  I would recommend them to anyone who is looking for a good, honest, gentle dentist.

Tanya, it was about 1-2 years ago, and the name has slipped my mind. I tried looking in my records but can't find anything --maybe it was a free initial consultation, so no receipts? Anyway, he was an older man (maybe mid 60s). I remember being kind of confused that he would still be in practice. He was recommended by my dentist, whom I love (Joanne Allen) but she doesn't care to do the pediatric stuff.

My children saw Dr. Meckler (father) for several years.  I was always aloud in the room with them and even encouraged to hold their hand if needed.  Then his son Gary came to his office and things really changed.  The parents ar no longer allowed in the room even if you are a long standing patient, they have moved up on Paseo and Barstow I believe and prices went sky high.  I have switched to a dentist on  the west side and my children love him.    Dr. Mark Johnson phone# 922-9511.  Hope this helps.

There are actually still dentists that will not allow parents in with the kids?  Hmm, maybe I should stick with our general dentist.  He had told me he was fine with us being present for EVERY proceedure.  Dr. Shaw also does not allow the parents in with the kids, that's why we left the practice.
