We are going to start Singapore's primary math 1a/1b program and were wondering if those of you that use it supplement with other programs or if you use the intensive practice or if you even feel it's necessary to add more to the workbooks. I had thought about doing Miquon math in addition to Singapore and doing the intensive practice (and the rainbow rock CD) but this seems like an awful lot of math work and I don't want to burn her out. On the other hand I had heard that Singapore doesn't really offer a lot of practice. Any input would be helpful. Thanks, Jo-Anne |

| We have it all for Singapore; Rainbow Rock, Intensive practice, Challenging word problems, and the regular workbook. We have not found it too overwhelming, but we also do not use another program. We typically do one or two lessons a day depending on Sophie's interest that day. There is enough there with the additional workbooks, but I guess you will have evaluate how your child does. I hope that this helps... |

We have the intensive practice and challenging word problems. For my son, we usually don't even do all the exercises & reviews that come with the regular workbook & textbook, because I know from watching him when he gets a concept and doesn't need more practice. That kind of careful selection of the amount of work we do each day is key to avoiding burnout, in my opinion.
However, for areas where he continues to have difficulty even after doing all the workbook and textbook exercises, we turn to the intensive practice and challenging word problems to supplement.
I think you have to play by ear how much math you do. Some kids need more, some need less, depending on both the particular area being covered, their level of interest, and their ability. Luckily, the extra books aren't too expensive. |

Thank you for the help. I wasn't really crazy about doing two math programs but wanted to be sure that she would get the practice if she needed it. Jo-Anne mom to Cecilia 6 and Joseph 3 |

Can you all tell me a bit about Singapore. I've heardit is really good. I'm searching right now for new curriculum for Ian. - Can you get samples sent to you? - What made you decide on Singapore?
I had ordered Saxon and didn't like it all.

Monica, my sister didn't care for saxon, switched to singapore and turned me on to it. You can find placement tests, descriptions, sample pages at various places, such as http://www.singaporemath.com and http://www.sonlight.com/singapore.html.
A few previous posts that discussed it:

I have books you can take a look at from pre-K to 7th grade. Let me know. |
