Now that the warmer weather is approaching, I was wondering what everyone thought about picking a day, maybe monthly, for a park day that all homeschoolers are invited to? A couple people have mentioned to me that they used to have these in towns where they live, and once it became a regular event people would even bring books/curriculum etc to swap/sell.
If anyone has experience with this kind of all ages, all welcome type of park day (either pro or con) I'd be interested in hearing about it. Does it work? Do the kids run totally wild? Do people stay in their small groups of people they know, or does it work in helping people get to know each other. |

We would love this. In Sioux Falls the park day was weekly. The kids generally did run wild, but semi contained. We had two groups meeting simultaneously and though some stuck to their group there was plenty of back and forth. We would rbing lunch and stay from 11 - 2ish.
Are there any parks around ere that have wading pools? |

GOAL has park day every week and anyone who is interested is welcome to join us. Right now it is Thursdays from 1 to 3 PM. Bring a chair or blanket if you come.

| Yes, Yes, Yes ! We would come! I think, personally that it would be an awesome way to network. New friends for myself and my kids and a great way to re-unite with faces not seen in a while. We could eye curriculums, talk tricks of the trade and have adult coversation time! We'll keep our eyes out! |

I would be interested in one for the Rio Rancho area. My son is almost 3 and I have a daughter due this April. If anyone wants to set one up for Rio Rancho e-mail me at jablais@msn.com
Thanks Janie |

I guess it depends upon interest, and could certainly change to weekly if there were enough families coming. (Nothing more depressing to come to a park day all by yourself when you're expecting lots of friends!)
I was thinking that at first, we might try to alternate between east and west sides of town, meeting once a month.
Meg, I wasn't sure if you were suggesting that the all-homeschoolers park day should combine with the GOAL park day, or if going to GOAL would be an alternative to setting up another day. I guess I'd hesitate to "take over" an established park day, mainly because I would have no idea how many new people would be coming. A couple extra families at GOAL would be no problem, but it might mess things up for GOAL members if it were 25 new families!
Janie, if you want to contact me about a good day/location for you for a westside park day, maybe we could kick off on the west side of town next month or something. |

LOL - I was only putting it out there as a possibility. GOAL is extremely laid back and having other people show up would not be a problem. Right now we're in a seasonal shift from a community center back to the park over by the fair grounds, so where we are for the next 2-3 weeks will be dependent on weather.
To give people an idea of 'park day,' today we had a mixed aged/sex group of 10 to 14 yr olds playing flag football. A handful of pre-teen girls hanging out on the swings talking and a group of younger boys playing with some spaceships. Basketball is often popular and so is a large totally mixed-aged group of capture the flag.
GOALs only requirement is that at least one of your kids is school-aged and that if you bring younger siblings (they are welcome) that you take responsibility of keeping track of them and not expect the kids to babysit. Moms sit around and chat, unless they need to chasing after toddlers. <g> |
