My husband and I lived as a couple for about 20 years before buying a TV, and then we only did it because we didn't want our kids to be deprived!! But the TV is in our guest room, and we don't ever think to turn it on, so it mostly gathers dust except when we check a video out of the library. I guess maybe kids take on the attitude and habits of parents to some extent.
Eric and Ruby both enjoy videos, but they tend to always pick the same ones: math for Eric (yes, there are actually math videos out there) or animals for Ruby. I do think they get more out of life by spending less time in front of the tube. However, their mom needs to get a life and get away from the computer!!! |

| Here is a great way that television is wonderful for our family. Today is World Travelers Club - China. Right now Sorscha is watching "Wonder Pets". It is about China and pandas in opera no less. haha |

I hope you don't mind me playing devil's advocate here.
There are lots of studies done that show the neuro-chemistry is altered by watching too much TV and even increases with the video games. Children who are ADHD or ADD are especially prone to this. It actually increases the symptoms (so to speak) of Attention breaking down, irritability rising, Hyper behaviros increasing.
I think it's balance. I enjoy watching TV. I have also noticed that when Ian watches too much his personality changes and is less relational. Ian is very sustible to nightmares. I've seen him making choices not to watch certain things, and sometimes I have to step in.
He loves educational kids stuff too. I love for him to watch those. Sometimes even documentaries freaked him out and had a nightmare that night (it was on Roswell).
We just talk A LOT - - - it's good seeing him making good choices, but I still step in at times.
There's even been research done that show teenagers minds are still not completely developed. The part of the brain that weighs at consequences and logical thinking.
I believe in impowering my kiddo. I think Natural Consequences are the best and I'm out of the way of the behavior. I also think that different kids will struggle more in different areas, and I help carry them through those years.
I hope I didn't offend anyone, I wanted to join in the on the conversation.

Actually, neuro chemicals are altered but not in the way that you think. There is a LOT that we don't know about brain function and many of the studies done don't focus on brain chemistry but rather electro activity. For instance, one study used EEG to study a preschooler watching cartoons - what a suprise lower brain waves than when being read to... however that same child when watching educational TV (I believe the show was Sesame Street) actually had higher and more frequent brain waves than the one being read to. There are LOTS of studies out there that prove that TV (not junk TV, but educational) is the reason why American's IQ's have risen so drastically in recent generations. Not only that there's a book called Open Mind that talks about the complexity of the show/video game and how that forces the mind to "solve the puzzles" as it were. As for the ADD and ADHD scenario - scientists (one of my psych nursing journals - wish I could find it now cause I'd quote) have found that they aren't sure if it's really at all related to watching "quality TV" or if it's because the children do not focus in such ways thereby creating increased hyperactivity (the chicken or the egg phenomena which came first, hyperactivity or TV causing the hyperactivity) - the moth in a jar type scenario. Again, you mentioned balance. I think that's what's lacking in most cases. Too many parents use the TV as the babysitter. I myself am guilty of putting on a show for the kids just to get 10 minutes of quiet. (It rarely works - my kids are really not that fond of TV. My son LOVES The Wiggles but would rather play with his Thomas trains than watch a video... same is true of my daughter.) As a matter of fact, I don't think either of them has EVER watched a 30 minute program straight through as they decide to go outside and play, play a grame etc. At any rate, just my 2 cents. Jo-Anne, the whole brain waves is very interesting. Have you heard of the Alpha-Waves. I read a study that showed that about 10 years the brain chemistry changes, patterns are set, Creativity even begins decreasing. The alpha waves sped up at that time. That it can be slowed back down (even adults) through different ways; meditating, etc.... That when they slowed down, that was when creative solutions and ideas came forth - and during those times, change for the most part could occur, if desired. The neuro studies are so fascinating? The problem with them is like anything else, depending on who and when the study occured or how it occured, it could change. The brain is such a complex organ, that I wonder if we have even touched the tip of the ice berg.
I'd love to talk with you more some time!!!

| Alpha waves are the "lowest waves' these are the waves seen in "brain death" the ones that keep our most basic needs (ie breathing, heart beat etc). That's at least what I've been told by neurologists - I'm an RN and often times, a neurologist has to come evaluate if a patiet on a ventilator etc has any "higher brain function". Now, doctors have been known to be wrong- and I'm not going to get into a debate about extending life, life support, right to die etc. That is beside the point. The only reason I brought that up was to give background as to where my info comes from. You're right, the technology etc changes constantly. An article written 10 years ago would have been accurate for it's time, but I would be hesitant to believe it word for word today given the rate at which discoveries have been made. Again, I believe that anything in excess is not healthy - TV, chocolate (what am I saying, chocolate is always the answer =) -) at any rate, it's important for there to be moderation, and if TV turn off week did that for people great, but I highly doubt that those that park their kids in front of the TV actually participated and if they did, a week in a child's lifetime will do little good. Just my 2 cents. =) |
