The PE department at UNM is willing to provide us with an 8-wk PE class for homeschoolers again this fall.  It was a success the last couple of falls and I've had many requests to organize it again so here it is!

Class Description
PE class for homeschoolers in conjunction with the physical education department at the University of New Mexico.  Under the supervision of the instructor, student teachers who are majoring in PE work with the children in small, age appropriate groups.  The curriculum covers the fundamental movements of Locomotion, Non-locomotion, Manipulation and the application of movement concepts of Space, Effort and Relationships to those skill themes.  The activities are developmentally appropriate for the skill level of the children in each group.

The class time is Thursdays, 8:45 - 9:15 am on campus at Johnson Center (across from Popejoy Hall off Central).  The dates are, Thursdays, October 5th through December 7th, not including UNM Fall Break (Oct. 12) and Thanksgiving (Nov. 23), for a total of 8 classes.  The professor needs the kids there and ready to go at 8:45, which means that you'd probably need to be on campus no later than 8:35 by the time you park, walk in, etc.

For kids ages 5-11, and siblings under age 5.  This class is open to all homeschoolers.  Please register with Sharon (exerscience@earthlink.net) or respond to thread.  There is no charge for this class; however, there is a charge for parking on campus.  Parking costs $1.25 for one hour and is convenient to class location.
Thanks!

Hi Everyone!

We've had a fabulous response this year to the PE class registration.  We have had to close the class (at 60 children).  This will be a nice number to work with and still allows lots of room for the children to play as the gym is very large.  In addition, it maintains a good teacher student ratio of 1 teacher to 3-4 children.

However, I will be taking names for a waiting list for those still interested in the class.  Please feel free to contact me if you'd like to be put on the waiting list as we frequently have families that double book or change their mind as the semester approaches.
Thanks!
Sharon

It sounds awesome!

If only they held an afternoon class or even one
around 11am.
8:45am is just too early for us to get ourselves ready
and down to the UNM area from Rio Rancho.

We are planning on signing up for the Rio Rancho
Parks & Rec Homeschool PE class again this season.

We were very pleased with the activities, as well as the
time schedule. It is twice a week for 2 hours each day, and
always in the afternoon.
My sons enjoyed the instructor, too, a recent college graduate.
And he's supposed to return again this season. Yay!

Hi Lisa,
I totally know what ya mean.  I happen to be a nightowl and those mornings are difficult.  It's always worth it though b/c the kids have a blast!  I've also found that it's actually nice to be out and about so early in the morning.  It starts our day off good and the day actually seems longer!  (so that's the secret of all you morning larks!)  I guess maybe I should try going to bed earlier and setting my alarm to enjoy the fresh mornings more often!

Good advice, Sharon.

Wish that'd work for me, but it often
seems to backfire when I attempt the
'early bird' routine.
I always end up crashing
by the afternoon and require a nap
to rejuvinate myself to continue the rest
of the day.

Thankfully I have 'morning challenged' children, too.
Jackson & Jeremiah rarely wake up and
are functional until after 9:00am.
Jenna wakes around 9:30am and doesn't like
to be rushed around until she has time to
acclimatize herself to the morning. hehe

I like that - acclimatize to the morning!  I think I'll start using that as an excuse too!
