Hi all! I'm looking into beginning some sort of piano instruction for my son, but he prefers to try self-teaching instead of having lessons. I'm trying to figure out what kind of books and/or software might be out there that we can use. My husband and I both play a very little bit, so we can try to do a bit of teaching as well. Has anyone else tried this?
I was hoping to pick up some used instruction books on Ebay or something, if anyone can recommend a particular series? Also (thanks, Jenifer!) I've been looking into the Piano Nanny web site (http://www.pianonanny.com) which look interesting! |

Elizabeth, My mom (who is a music teacher, private and Elem and High school) recommended Alfred's Basic Piano Library Prep Course for the Young Beginner by Gayle Kowalchiyk and E.L. Lancaster.
For jack and Lana she got Level A Notespeller Book (which has workbook page style activities to learn the notes on the piano, chords and intervasls), Lesson Book (basics and songs to learn), Activity and Ear Training Book (reinforces concepts, listening activities), and Technic book(fits with lesson book, has warm-ups and extra learning).
We mostly use the ear training book and the lesson book, Lana loves to sit down and color the activities in the ear training book. Jack will sit down with the lesson book and work out songs, they are very easy and give all sorts of hints, show the fingers to be used, the names of the notes, the hands, etc.
She says to me "Just remember to have fun"

I don't know how much you want him to learn but we found a free website called http://www.pianonanny.com that teaches staffs and reading notes in addition to practical applications and where the notes are on the keyboard.
