Student Ecology Research Programs Fall Science Education Opportunities

Registration begins August 21st and ends September 7th. Families enrolled in classes that do not fill will be notified on September 8th that the class will not take place and will receive a full refund.

Course fees are due at the time of registration. Anyone who has not paid will not be considered enrolled in the class until payment is received. This will impact both whether courses run and the student’s position on any waiting lists.

Membership with the New Mexico Museum of Natural History Foundation is required for participation. Please include either your member number or $50 membership fee with your registration.

Primary Outreach Program
Program is designed for elementary students but is open to anyone who is interested in developing the skills necessary to understand basic ecology concepts including evolution in ecology through classroom, field and museum-based programs.

Ecology Explorations
4 sessions
Students will explore ecology concepts through hands-on learning experiences and games that illustrate how ecosystems function. This class is geared toward students who can listen attentively, follow simple instructions and participate constructively with other students and adult guides. Emphasis will be placed on developing math and literacy skills at an elementary level.

Dates and time: Fridays from 2 to 3:30 on September 29,  October  27, November 17 and December 1

Mysteries of the Nile Home School Day
1 session
Families will explore the similarities and differences between the Nile watershed and the Rio Grande watershed.  Students will attend the Dynatheater presentation of Mysteries of the Nile and will participate in classroom activities designed for upper elementary students. This class is geared toward students who have mastered basic math and reading skills, can listen attentively, follow simple instructions and participate constructively with other students and adult guides. Teen Outreach Program
Program will engage teens in hands-on, minds-on learning experiences, which will include field classes, camps, discussion groups and museum based courses. The Teen Outreach Program is open to any 13 through 18 years old.
Land

Water and Climate
4 sessions
We will explore the abiotic framework of the ecosystem. Students are expected to have achieved proficiency in basic math and literacy skills and will be expected to conform to standard classroom behavior. Occasional field trips require students to be respectful of others, listen attentively regardless of distractions, and comply accurately and immediately with directions from staff. Use of chemicals and scientific survey equipment requires the ability to understand safety issues and to strictly follow proper use procedures. Students who display unsafe behavior of any kind will be immediately dismissed without refund.

River Hydrology
2 sessions

Autumn Adventure Camp
4 sessions (over one week )
Previous offerings in this category include Wild Horse Week, Beaver Week and Prairie Dog Week. We will work with an ecology researcher to provide an in-depth classroom, lab and field experience that will enhance the students’ understanding of the ecosystem in which we live and give them experience using scientific methods in sample collection and processing and collecting and recording data. A letter will be sent confirming participation and describing the research we will be assisting.
