Hello, I have a weird question I think, I am new to homeschooling I will be starting to Homeschool our 5 and 3 yr old DD's I have read all the rules and such and It says we have to homeschool 180 days like the public schools BUT it doesn't say how many HOURS do you need to homeschool is there an amount of time thru the day that you must home school 6-7 hours like regular school? I am wondering because my 5 yr old DD has hypothyroidism which is one of the many reason's we are going to be homeschooling but I don't want to have to get her up at like 7-8 a.m. IF I don't have to so can anyone tell me how many hours a day you need to homeschool?
TIA

I'm sure the powers that be would love to have you keep your kids chained to a desk for 6-7 hours per day. Luckily for us, this isn't something that they require record-keeping on. Get my drift?

That's a good way of phrasing it, Elizabeth.

Another thing to look at is that in school a kid isn't sitting "doing school" for 7 straight hours.  There are class periods, breaks, lunches, roll call, discipline etc...In the end 7 hours turns into about 3 of actual work time.  And much of that is pointless busy work anyway!

And don't worry.  It's not a weird question.  I'm pretty sure I asked exactly the same thing about a year ago.

I can only speak for myself and my son. We do about 3 hours a day, I would say. We school every day, including Sunday and through summer, but we do that so that we can take off "blech!" days if and when we feel like them and because we do a lot of fieldtrips and are outside a lot.

I school through summer and other holidays because I felt he simply lost too much from doing nothing for several months or even weeks. But that is a personal choice and depends on your child.

We do get up early in the morning, but that is because we like that. And we go slow. We will sit sipping our tea, waking up slowly and smile at each other when the yellow tin comes by. We have been on their schedule and done that and did NOT like it, thank you

All and all I'd say three to four hours a day should do it. That is what most homeschool moms I know do. But the nice thing about homeschooling is that nothing is written in stone.
