Dear Fellow Homeschooler,
My name is Brad Scott and I am writing to seek your assistance. I am a father of two homeschooled children and am trying to let others know that I can provide on-line tutoring to grades 8 - 12 level math students. With the advent of technology, online tutoring has become virtually as effective as tutoring in person. Because of my support of, and belief in, homeschooling, it is primarily to homeschooled student whom I wish to provide my services. It is difficult to find an effective means to reach homeschooled students and I wish to gain your assistance. If there is any means by which you could inform other homeschoolers of my services (ex.: newsletters/links on websites/word of mouth, etc.), I would be most grateful. Or if there are any avenues you could suggest I should try, I would greatly appreciate that, too.
It is now possible to receive effective tutoring -online- using the collaborative software called NetMeeting. Nearly all current Windows operating systems come with this software already installed, and it is a free download to those who do not have it. NetMeeting has proven to fulfill all the requirements conducive to excellent tutoring communications. These include full-duplex speech capability (just like a telephone) with speakers and microphone; video via webcam; text messaging; file transfer abilities; and MOST EXCITING: an interactive "whiteboard" where both the student and tutor can draw on the same screen, and make changes to the other participant's work.
My expertise is drawn from having two young children who also are being homeschooled; in addition to my more than 10 years math tutoring experience. My aim with students is to explain things in a clear logical way that they will understand; instructing them in the WHY more than in the HOW. This style of teaching is directed to COMPREHENSION rather than RETENTION, allowing the student to understand why they're doing what they're doing, as opposed to having to remember how to do something. Learning of this nature will stay with them for their lifetime. It is this approach which has rewarded me at the end of many sessions with the exclamation: "That's SO EASY!"
I do enjoy my work as a math tutor very much, and would love to offer my service to those, like myself, who believe, and are involved in, homeschooling. Would you please consider spreading my information to those within the homeschooling community with whom you may have contact? Any assistqnce would be greatly appreciated. I truly wish to help students realize that math can be both enjoyable and easy. And my efforts are to do what I can to help them.
