Hello...  I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for teaching reading.

Thanks!

One suggestion: Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons (it's been recommended by numerous people on this board, as well as my homeschooling sister of 5 in California!).

I think it may be at the library, you can check the online catalog at http://www.cabq.gov/library/.

Or read the reviews at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obi.....26s=books%26n=507846

Good luck!

I just read Get Ready to Read by Toni S. Gould.  Excellent book!  Borrows many ideas from Maria Montessori (loved the book The Montessori Method).  Great readiness games to play with your three and four year old children. More games for reading, writing and spelling.  Her opinions on teaching the alphabet sounds before the letter names as well as teaching lower case letters before the upper case letters make so much sense to me.  I taught first and second grade before the birth of my son and I am a strong believer in teaching phonics!

You can order the book much cheaper second hand if you click on Compare Prices.

If you join our co-op, we meet twice a year to discuss and share curriculum!

There is a website to go with the book Elizabeth mentioned above.  http://donnayoung.org/pen/100/100ez8.htm Lessons to go with
TEACH YOUR CHILD TO READ IN 100 EASY LESSONS  by, Siegfried Engelmann.

By the way, I read your post under Introductions and wanted to say welcome!  I have two boys, 4 yrs. and the little guy is almost 10 months.

Hi

I used the series Animal Antics by Nora Gaydos. All the bookstores carry them.  It is very user friendly and phonetic control.  Your child need only need to know the alphabet and the basic letter sounds.  These books 1-4 will do the rest.  They find success from day one.  They are funny and have stickers to boot. My son was reading on the first grade level when he was done.
She also has pre readers that I would not recommend.  Just go right into it with books 1-4.
Good luck!
