Balloon Summer Camp. Learn about ballooning history, piloting, crewing, navigation, weather, and more through hands-on experiences at the Balloon Museum! Introduction to Tin Whistle – Andy Moss, Instructor
You have always wanted to try it! This workshop will be a great way to get you started playing the Irish Tin Whistle. The beginner will learn the basics of this versatile and easy-to-play instrument. It is not necessary to read music for this workshop! Bring your own whistle (key of D) or get one at Apple Mountain for only $9.95.
On the second Saturday of each month, Lowe's hosts a building workshop for children, free of charge. I believe it starts at 10 a.m. and lasts one-hour.
On the first Saturday of each month, Home Depot offers the same sort of workshop between 9 a.m. and noon. (It only lasts that long if there's enough interest.)
These are free programs and great for both genders. Free aprons and eye protection are usually included and available for take-home. Certificates are personalized and offered at the end for successful completion of the project. Lowe's gives a patch and a sticker. Home Depot gives a pin for clothing. These are fun to collect and/or scrapbook. Take your camera . . . it's a hoot!
First Fridays Fractals: In the LodeStar Planetarium
On the First Friday of each month come to the planetarium to behold the spectacular beauty and mystery of Fractals. Come and enjoy these fantastic creations and learn about the beauty of fractal patterns, fractal mathematics, Chaos Theory, and fractals in nature in this LIVE presentation in our 55 foot digital dome theatre. This presentation is entertaining for young and old alike and is guaranteed to educate and entertain all who watch!

This workshop is an overview of the popular children's series, highlighting ways that the program builds literacy skills. The 25th Anniversary Celebration of the Rio Grande Nature Center!
Come join us as we celebrate 25 fantastic years at the Nature Center. Events and activities include: ribbon cutting, birthday cake, silent auction, historic photo display, special speakers, live animals, guided bird and nature walks, pond viewing and activities.
The water sprayground is located at Manzano Mesa Multigenerational Center and is open from May 29 through August 31, 2007 to people of all ages. However, children under the age of 12 must be supervised by an adult over the age of 18 at all times. There is no official lifeguard on duty; however the Center provides staff who monitor the sprayground at all times during normal operational hours.

Geocache / GPS Basics: The SMNHC’s four geocashes are great for first timers honing their GPS skills or geocache veterans looking for a new challenge.
The Sandia Mountain Natural History Center is an environmental education center located in Cedar Crest. The center teaches over 10,000 students a year about the Sandia Mountains, ecology and conservation.
Sandia Mountain Natural History Center's First Saturday Series The Sandia Mountain Natural History Center will be opening its doors to the public the first Saturday of every month between March and September. All Saturdays will include self-guided hikes, two hands-on exhibit rooms (Eco-Casa and Explorer's Center), and a bird viewing deck. Every month will have specific themes such as birding, guided hikes, and family days. Education sessions begin at 10:00 a.m. Special equipment such as GPS units, field guides, and binoculars will be available in limited numbers for check-out from the SMNHC staff.

Jazz Camp, now entering its fourteenth year, is designed to activate the creative minds of children. Each morning children concentrate on the musical skills of rhythm, melody and harmony. Elective classes in dance and visual arts provide alternate activities that round out each afternoon. In the spirit of Jazz music, Jazz Camp encourages improvisation and individual expression while establishing a structure of cooperation and mutual respect. No previous musical experience is required.
Average class size is twelve children and a counselor accompanies each group at all times. Morning and afternoon snacks are provided but children are asked to bring a sack lunch.
Morning Classes
• Jazz Jam Band Instructor: Kevin Kinane ◦ Unstoppably creative, Kevin has devoted years to sparking kids' interest in music making. This year at camp he will instruct the older groups in learning the basics of the jazz jam. Students use keyboards, guitars and percussion to learn simple chord progressions and basic 'grooves' as a structure for individual musical explorations or improvisation.
• Marimba Instructor: Lucas Critchfield & Michael Anaya The marimba is structured like a piano but easier for kids to play. It has a lovely mellow tone making it great for ensemble work. Lucas is currently the band director at Del Norte High School. He and Mike are back at camp for the seventh year for miraculous mallet madness.
• Drums of the World Instructor: Blake Himm An expansion of our popular African Drumming class, this course will cover not only the drums of Africa, but of Japan, Ireland and Australia. Campers will be exposed to many different cultures in this wonderful class.
Afternoon Electives
• African Dance Instructor: Romy Keegan An exuberant dance form, this class uses live drumming to ensure a high level of enthusiasm. Romy has studied African dance for over ten years and currently performs with the Blue Tribe Dance Company. This year will be Romy's seventh summer of teaching with Jazz Camp.
• Capoeira Instructors from Capoeira Pegadas Referred to as the Martial Art of Brazil, this movement form was developed by Brazilian slaves. Slaves fought for their freedom using a variety of acrobatic kicks, turns, handstands and leaps. Capoeira Pegadas has a wonderful year-round program for adults and children and we're happy to have them back for more.
• Drum Set, Folk Instruments, Instrument Building Instructor: Kevin Kinane
Session A: Drum Set Drum set ranks high in poplarity among our campers and Kevin has designer a class with a strong focus on stick technique as well as incorporating all the elements of the drum set.
Session B: Folk Instruments No experience necessary for this class. Students will explore ukeleles, harmonicas, string instruments percussion and the piano.
Session C: Instrument Building Campers will build several instruments in this fun class including rain sticks and other percussion instruments and utilize them in a practical performance setting.
• Studio Art Instructor: Alexa Grodner The relaxed atmosphere of studio art is a favorite for many Jazz Campers. We are pleased to have Alexa Grodner back with us for Jazz Camp 2006 with her workshop in 3-D creations. She is a fee lance sculptor and art educator who enjoys leading young people on wonderfully imaginative journeys into the third dimension. Courses and instructors subject to minor changes.

Families will choose 5 different activities with our Starfire Instructors such as: archery, art project, woodshop project, or our famous tree climb. For those 8 years and older, there is also the target sports of BB gun or paintball slingshot. On your own, there is swimming, ropes course, mountain bike (bring your own bicycles) and even Frisbee golf. Dinner included -- Yummee!! (And Mom doesn't have to cook!!) Stay for the evening campfire with skits (you know you have talent), songs, stargazing. Overnight is optional! Tent camping or RV's welcome (no hookups)

A couple of Questions. Is the Lodestar appropriate for little ones? I'm wondering about my two younger ones. And what about the Lowe's workshop? Is there an age limit? Thanks!
The Lodestar might work well IF your kids are enjoying the movie theater experience already. Since it surrounds you, it is definitely more "impacting." Johnny does well inside; but, Jazzy fidgets. Sometimes we'll divide up - one parent inside the theater with Johnny, the other parent outside in the museum with Jazzaroo.
The Lowe's workshops are truly friendly for any age. Even if they want you to do most of the constructing, they gain an appreciation for it by watching and then they have a cool little gizmo to play with (although some items aren't as secure as others, etc.)
BTW, at Lowe's they give every kiddo a nice pin/badge, a sticker, and a certificate of completion and these are fun to collect if you happen to scrapbook or portfolio . . . I like to take my camera and get a photograph of each project . . . and then I usually end up throwing the project away after a week or so (but we still have the photo to remember it by).
