1.  Update on the PED on-line Home School Notification- As a result of the letter written on February 3rd, and face to face conversations with PED staff, lines of communication have been opened with the PED in Santa Fe concerning on-line notification.  While time will be the true test of our efforts, CAPE board directors are pleased with the direction things are taking.  Contact was made with Secretary of Education Dr. Veronica Garcia and several of her staff in the PED.  We have yet to see anything in writing but preliminary discussion provided us with an assurance that written notification has and will always be accepted by the department.  A tentative date has been set for a face to face meeting between members of the PED Staff and CAPE board directors to discuss issues such as security of the on-line notification form and the continuing debate over names and ages of children.

IMPORTANT NOTE Updated 2-20-06 The PED staff is aware that the form does not currently allow us to notify for the 2006-2007 school year.  They have assured us that you will be able to notify on-line by the third week of March.  If you would like to notify before then, you may download the updated form here and mail it in.  



2.  Early Bird Convention Registration Deadline—March 7, 2006- Take advantage of the $34 early bird convention rate by registering on-line or by mail before March 7th.   After March 7th the rate to attend the 10th annual CAPE Home Educators Convention goes to $42.  After March 21st the rate will be $47.  Register now and save.



3.      Update on CAPE-NM’s On-Line Convention Registration- Thanks to all of you who have registered online for the convention April 20-22.  For those folks who have yet to register, please consider doing so on-line.  Everyone will have to register as a new user the first time around.  Please note, your email address will be your username on the CAPE website.

4.  Fruit or Vegetable Recipe & Artwork Contest—March 11, 2006- New Mexico youth are invited to participate in a fruit or vegetable recipe and artwork contest. This project is a combined effort of the Wellness Coalition, American Heart Association, the New Mexico Dietetic Association and the New Mexico 5-A-Day Coalition.



Four grade ranges are eligible to enter the contest:  K-2, 3-5, 6-8 & 9-12.  The guidelines and form for submission are available for download as a pdf file here .  Please mail recipe and/or artwork postmarked no later than March 11, 2006. Judging by youth will be at a booth at the American Heart Association Walk on March 25, 2006. Winners will be notified after March 25th. The top recipe in each age group will be published in either a cookbook or calendar. The publication will be made available to school and clubs as a fundraiser.
