If you would like your high school student to practice public speaking skills in a friendly, non-stressful environment, please consider this Junior Toastmasters opportunity.

A Junior Toastmaster club is similar to an adult Toastmaster club.  Officers are elected and run each meeting.  At the meetings, everyone is assigned a role to give a prepared speech, evaluate a speech or practice impromptu speaking.  Specific types of speeches are required to receive awards and progress to higher levels in the Toastmaster program.  There is a fee for starting a new club that will be shared by the members.  It is typically less than $20 a year per member and includes all necessary handbooks.

Orators Gavel Club-part of Toastmasters International

My 6 yr old son just recently attended his first Toastmasters meeting, and it seems like a good opportunity, so I thought I would post the information that I had received on this since they are actively recruiting new members....    - Julie D.

Hello fellow homeschoolers,

We have a group of very dedicated homeschoolers that are becoming great orators.  In fact their group is called the Orators Gavel Club.  It's a part of Toastmasters International.   We've been meeting for about 3 years with kids ranging in age from 5 to 16 (basically the kids need to be able to read and be supportive of their peers).  We don't have an upper end age limit on the kids, though they can join Toastmasters International at 18.

We meet at the Lomas /Tramway Library in Albuquerque the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from 2:00 to 3:15 p.m.    The cost is $8.00 for the speaking manual per child and $5.00 every 6 months per family.  Please visit our meeting and see if this group might be a fit for you.

Warmest regards,
Barbara & Dr. Norman Dawson

Albuquerque Gavel Club is an official group of Toastmaster's International.

Join us for a FUN way to learn public speaking skills!!  For grades 1-12, this group has plenty of teens and tweens and lots of laughs. They practice public speaking, hold office (President, VP, etc) and basically run the meetings themselves!  New Toastmasters are provided a "buddy" (a more experienced Toastmaster) to help show them the ropes, plus they receive a workbook to help them plan out their topics.  Free to come visit, and only $5 per year if you want to join!

We meet at the Erna Fergusson Library on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month! As a parent, I can vouch for this group's effectiveness: Mine went from crying if she had to get up in front of a group to giving science presentations to judges and teaching classes too, and she's made a lot of friends and fond memories along the way.  Come see what fun we're having!  3pm-4:30 Tuesday!  Questions:  489.2880
