Hi! My name is Kara. I just moved here with my husband and daughter (and grumpy cat) about 3 weeks ago. We're just getting settled in and are enjoying meeting new people and learning about the city of Albuquerque. We're unschoolers but I really don't like to label us. We just live our lives without worrying about the label!
My daughter, Sophia, is 9. The biggest thing in our lives right now is POKEMON. But she has other interests as well, including:
Greek mythology Japanese culture (anime, manga, language, customs, foods, movies...) bats chatting online (on Gaia, Club Penguin...) Tintin Garfield and other comics drawing making movies music reading (esp. manga!) Youtube swimming games (is newly interested in learning Go) mysteries and detectives (Columbo, Nancy Drew, Jessica Fletcher, Poirot, Sherlock Holmes...)
I know I'm forgetting stuff but that's all I can recall right now. I have mommy brain! LOL
Me? I like movies (watching for fun and critically, writing about movies, trying to learn edit program so I can MAKE movies!), books (esp history, biographies, diff. cultures...), crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, games, sleeping (really, I LOVE to sleep!), hanging out and talking over wine or cookies or both, cooking and talking/writing about cooking and food.
How do you like Albuquerque so far? We'd love to see you and Sophia at a park day sometime soon!
Edited to add: I just tried to respond to your request for event email, but it has been bounced back to me two times. If you will PM me with your email address and I'll try again.
Mom to 11 year old Ethan. Pet mama to Harvey, Sofe, Autumn, and Tippy
We moved from Prague, Czech Republic. We had moved there when Sophia was 13 months old. She and I have only visited the US once in the over 8 years we lived overseas. So I'm having a bit of a culture shock. She isn't, though! Kids adapt amazingly well, don't they?
Welcome we just moved into Albuquerque 3 months ago and had found the greatest support groups here. We are homeschoolers and the kids love it. Michal really enjoyed trading with Sophia today. She was a wonderful gal. You are doing a good job mom.
Hi Kara, I enjoyed meeting you yesterday! These are some of our favorite places to visit in Albuquerque--in case you are looking for somthing to do.
The Rio Grande Nature Center Cliff's Amusement Park The Aquarium Museum of Natural History Explora UNM (roaming arounf and feeding the ducks at the duck pond, and there are several museums on campus) West Mesa Aquatic Center
Also, if you need any city info, you can dial 311 on a telephone. This is a free call, and they will give you any city info you need.
Hey there, your intro piqued my interest since I have a dd whose 9 as well and LOVES Pokemon. Are you going to the Cherry Hills' thng on Tues? We went for the first time this week. She also did the cribbage class there today too. (I *encouraged* her, but she ended up liking it since she LOVES games ofall sorts) Are you on mothering.com discusion boards? I feel like I remember you from there.
Anyway hope to meet you soon, we're new here as well.
It's great that you can see the beauty of ABQ after spending so much time in Prague. I had a hard time seeing the beauty of ABQ after spending a year in Portland, OR. LOL!
Sommeil- My son was born in Silverton, OR and I know what you mean... Oregon must be the most beautiful place on earth. But ABQ is still much prettier than where I grew up in SoCal!
Oh, gosh, I love Portland. I lived there for years. It would be #1 on my list of places to live if it hadn't rained 9-10 months out of the year every year we lived there.
Niobe, yes we go to the Pokemon League at Cherry Hills. Also, I am on Mothering.com as Karaboo
We are still enjoying all that ABQ has to offer but I admit I do sometimes miss the cobblestoned streets and pedestrian zones and am at times overwhelmed by ALL the open space here! LOL

I know what you mean. I grew up in the east san gabriel valley (so cal). We had smog so bad that we were kept in from recess at school. And oh how my lungs would burn after a day of playing outside.
