The Community Garden at Los Poblanos Fields Open Space is a place where an individual, a family, or a group can have a plot to grow fresh vegetables, flowers and herbs for their own use. Groups may also manage a plot and donate the food to a local food bank. To protect visitors, ground water and wildlife, the gardens at Los Poblanos Fields are farmed ”naturally“, so chemical fertilizers and pesticides are not permitted. With your participation, Los Poblanos Fields will become a true community farm. You can obtain a garden plot as an RGCF member. See membership page for details.
COMMUNITY GARDEN SPECIFICS 2008 WHERE: The community garden is located in the northwest corner of Los Poblanos Fields. Access is from Solar Road, west of Alvarado Elementary School. WHEN: The Garden is open in accordance with the availability of water from the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District-Elena Gallegos lateral. Once the acequias are shut-off gardeners will have to rely on hand-watering from large storage tanks. Therefore, we advise planting early spring crops, or planting varities that can survive on minimal watering. WHO: Anyone can have a plot to call their own. Advice and instruction are also available by RGCF staff. HOW: Send us an email or call 345-4580. We will contact you as soon as possible.
