Hi - My 3rd grader will be participating in this, and I told the mom who is hosting/leading it that I would post it on this website.  It sounds like a lot of fun, and since we are all so busy, it's nice to know that most of it takes place at home w/ only three "meets" at the home of the the leader.  What a fun way to build vocabulary!  


WORD MASTERS Vocabulary and Analogies Challenge

I will be hosting the Word Masters Challenge for 3rd graders this year.  This is a nationwide competition that holds three ‘meets’ during the school year, one in December, one in February and the final one in April.

The contest runs as follows: About three weeks before each meet your child will receive a list of 20 words.  They learn their meanings and usage to prepare themselves for using them in a 20 question analogy ‘test’ at the meet. An example analogy is

SNOW : WHITE :: BLOOD:________________________________
( a. vein / b. war / c. flowing / d. scarlet / e. ice )
I have done this contest for several years and have found that the kids not only enjoy it but also really learn the words inside and out and retain their meanings forever.  My high schoolers still will say, “Hey, that was a Wordmaster word!”

All the studying/preparation is done in your own home and you simply show up at my house in Rio Rancho on three occasions to take the challenge which takes about 30 minutes (there is no time limit)   Depending on the numbers enrolled, if space demands I will find an alternate location.


The only cost is the registration fee and some mailing expense.  This will be divided between the families so the fee will depend on how many registrants there are.  I am hoping to have at least 10 students to keep the fee down to $10.
