Loved the blog...  but the question still remains as to whether or not this is doable anymore.  I remember the day I got my first 10 speed bike and what freedom that meant.  I rode miles, probably more than was practical or wise, but what joy.  So how do we get this back?

Hubby and I were just discussing how when we were kids we'd walk to the local convenience store on a weekend and get a soda and a bag of chips.  What happened to that?  I don't even feel safe when my kids walk to the mailbox at the end of the block!

FYI the library now has the book Free-Range Kids by Lenore Skenazy.  I just finished it and think it is a good read whatever your parenting style.
