Activity Descriptions
These descriptions will be used on websites and in media interactions.
Monday: Get to Know Nuclear. Participants will use Geiger counters to learn
how everyday items, like bananas, emit very low levels of radiation. Items
that will be demonstrated include a gas lantern mantle, metal samples, and
more. A mouse-trap simulator will show how energy is produced by a nuclear
reaction. And want to see the invisible? A cloud chamber will show tracks of
alpha particles.
Tuesday: Nuclear Medicine. The American Society of Radiological
Technologists will present information on how medical images are created,
then used for diagnosis and treatment. They will also discuss career
opportunities in this vital field.
Wednesday: Energy Generation. The Sandia National Labs group of the North
American Young Generation in Nuclear will show how to make a mock nuclear
reactor...out of Legos! A miniature steam engine will also show how nuclear
energy heats steam, which produces electricity in a nuclear power plant.
Thursday: Nuclear Safety. With radiation in the world around us, how would
YOU detect that? And what would you wear to protect yourself to clean up a
nuclear event? Try on protective gear and use a black light to simulate a
mock clean-up environment.
Friday: Careers in Nuclear. Learn about careers in the nuclear industry from
actual professional engineers, then participate in a practice interview!
Many careers will be represented. Sandia Labs will have recruitment booth
for summer employment of High School Students.
