Akamai means intelligence or common sense in Hawaiian and reflects the attitude of using the natural resources found in your own backyard to learn while doing. Akamai Backyard used permaculture and Hawaiian farming methods to create edible landscaping which is sufficient enough to provide 90% of their school meals and feed their family off 1/3 of the yard of their 1/3 acre home while only producing about 1/2 can of garbage per week.
