Journal Staff Report
There's a new bookstore in town, and its sole aim is to engage kids and teens in reading and education.
Alamosa Books, near Paseo del Norte and Ventura NE, had its opening last month and will offer regular story times throughout the summer, beginning Memorial Day weekend and continuing every Sunday at 1 p.m. and Wednesdays at 11 a.m. Some of those will feature local celebrities as readers.
In July, the bookstore will offer mini-workshops on topics like poetry and science, catering mainly to middle and older elementary school students. The workshop dates have not been set, but they will be posted at
http://www.alamosabooks.com when the website launches at the end of this month.
The store is also in the process of starting a teen book club that will continue throughout the year and will include an online forum and an in-store discussion group.
Store owner Elizabeth Anker said in an e-mail that she aims for the store to be a safe hangout for children and teens, where they can read without buying and can also enjoy a table with craft supplies.
The store also stocks home-school supplies and educational toys and games, all aimed at keeping young brains active during the hot summer months.
