My wife and I (mostly my wife) have been homeschooling our seven year old son since the first grade using a homeschool program. Since he completed and advance in the course to third grade, we had planned on sending him to public school this year as a third grade. Shockingly, we found out that he would still have to repeat the second grade due the APS grade placement rules based on his current age before September 1, 12:01AM.
Well, I had talked to many people about the situation, including the Vice Principle of the school, and they had told me that having my son repeat the second grade in a public school would be good for him, mainly socially. His has no siblings, no families that live close by, and no neighborhood kids to play with. He does have two afternoon sports activities that he attends only once a week.
It idea had sounded good to me, but my wife did not like the idea of him repeating the second grade. After much strong and loud discussion with my wife about his situation, we decided to continue with homeschooling.
I’m not worried about my son not learning properly, I’m just worried about him not interacting with other kids his age and learning from other teachers and adults.
One of the main reason I join this group was to try and get some information about social groups, events, programs, etc…. for children who are homeschooled and hopefully get him out there meeting and learning from others besides his boring parents..
Thank you for your time and I’m glad to be part of this community.
