Albuquerque Area Homeschool Science & Engineering Fair - Friday, January 20, 2012
It’s that time of year again – time to get ready for the Albuquerque Area Homeschool Science & Engineering Fair. This year our fair will be held Friday, January 20th, 2012, at Heights First Church of the Nazarene on Paseo del Norte (between Wyoming and Ventura on the north side of the road – same place that we’ve always held it).
We hope you will consider participating with us. Our fair is open to all homeschoolers from kindergarten through 12th grade, as well as children in family schools, charter schools, or other schools who want to participate in a science fair, but do not have one available to them. Our policy is that we will never turn a child away from our science fair who wants to participate. We will have independent judges (no homeschool parents), and awards will go to the top three projects in the junior division (grades 6 – 8), and the top three projects in the senior division (grades 9 – 12). Children participating at the elementary level (grades K – 5) will be judged and will receive awards. Also, an overall, best-in-show award will be presented.
We’d really like to have anyone, grades kindergarten through 12th, participate and will help in any way we can. If your child has any question(s) concerning their ideas, project, methodology, analysis, etc., please don’t hesitate to have them email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or call (301-3644) me. In a few minutes we might save the them hours of time, especially if they’re stuck. Also, if you’re participating in another groups’ science fair, you’re welcome to ask questions of us, share any information we provide with others, and we’d love to have you come see our fair.
Please check out the Science Technology Engineering & Math (STEM) Education Outreach Program at the University of New Mexico. The STEM website is an incredible resource of information and you’ll find just about everything you need to know about science fairs and projects on their site.
I’m attaching several documents from the STEM office that you should be aware of and I’ll be sending more as we work our way to the science fair. You might want to print out this information and start a notebook to make it easy to refer to as needed. Note that if your project requires approval (read the requirements to know what paperwork you’re required to complete), you must have your approval (if required) BEFORE you begin your project. Also, the deadline for all protocols to be submitted to the STEM office is December 12th, 2011. Don’t mess this up because it’s really important. I will be checking paperwork for all projects as you check in the morning of the science fair. The paperwork is really no big deal so just do it, put it in your science fair project notebook, and have it with you.
I hope this information helps you as you get started. We have opted to err on the side of sending this to you concerning the science fair. If you are not interested in receiving this information, please let me know and I’ll take you off the list. If you find that these attachments, or any information that I distribute concerning the science fair might be of use to others, please don’t hesitate to forward it on to them for their use. Or, better yet, invite them to join with us this year.
We hope to see you at this years’ Albuquerque Area Homeschool Science & Engineering Fair. I’ll be sending out entry forms sometime this month. Heather
