June-August 2013 – Introduction to Programming
This summer I will be teaching an introduction to programming using the Python programming language. This will provide a basis for further study in computer science and software development. I assume no prior knowledge in programming, but basic familiarity with computers is helpful. This is not a course on how to use Windows or word-processing. This course will be very useful to anyone interested in science, engineering, math, business, economics, or just using a computer to simplify your studies. It is also a great introduction to logical thinking and procedural planning.
Thursday afternoons from June 6th to August 15th (off on August 1st) – 10 weeks of instruction.
Time TBD, but probably sometime between 1-3. I will split classes to keep them under 15 people.
I will be running at least two sections, with one targeted at older students and adults who have had at least Algebra. The other section will target students from around 3rd grade and up. They need to be comfortable working on a computer. Touch typing skills are very helpful, but not required (fast hunt-and-peck is ok, but you need to know where the keys are or it will be painful).
The class will be run in our home in the North Four Hills area in the South-Eastern part of Albuquerque. The cost will be $150 for the entire summer. Students should have access to a computer at home to work on assignments. Each week will consist of a 1 hour lecture, and a 1 hour lab time where students have an opportunity to bring a laptop and get help with programs. The lab time is optional. I will also be available to answer questions during the week via email.
About the Instructor:
Samuel has a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Missouri-Rolla and has taught courses at the university level. He was an adjunct faculty at Drury University, and currently works at Sandia National Laboratories.
Please let me know by May 23rd if you are interested in this opportunity. Adults are welcome and encouraged to participate along with their children (or alone).
